Dutch frame builder Nico Bakker is building a CB500 race frame , I heard some prices , very expensive

Last weekend we were in Belgium at the Chimay international classic bike races ,with very good and fast riders from Belgium, France , Germany , Holland and the UK.
There were many categories to race in , we raced in the multicylinder class with many fast Suzuki's T500 , Honda twins and fours ,Benelli four , Paton twin and Nourish twin.

We had two races on sunday.
Friday - Free practice - 7th of 35 riders
Saturday - Qualifying - 9th , clutch was slipping
For the races at sunday I put one more steel plate in the clutch.

Race 1 - Wet conditions - 6th , clutch was working well now, Yrjo was in a group of seven riders including Colin IOMTT 9 and finished in front of him.
Our Honda nr 4 friend finished second , he was fastest in qualifying.

Race 2 - Dry conditions - 5th , again a very good race and result for Yrjo.
And our Honda nr 4 friend won the race beating the Belgium Paton rider Herman Verboven by outbreaking him in the last corner just before the finish line. Difference 0.041 seconds

We were very happy with these results, both races we were the fastest Honda's.

We met also David Corlett from the UK who is riding a CB500f with the new Davies Motorsport frame.
A very nice frame , but he has a lot to do on the suspension and the power of his bike.

Well done guys, positive news.

I wonder if you have tried the new Avon AM20 front? Looks like in your picture you have the original "block pattern" tread. The last new tire I received in the same size has a different tread pattern, looks a bit more modern and says "for competition use only" so I expect they are replacing with this new one.

Hi Brent,

I know the new Avon tyre , Colin IOMTT is riding with that tyre.
But our 'old' tyre is still good but we will try the Dunlop KR825 after the Avon.

This weekend we go to the the dutch classic championship race in Assen.
The bike has now another silencer , we raced with it already in Chimay , its much lighter then the previous one.
It makes some more noise, I hope not to much , the limit in Assen is 103 dba.
We have build in our own refurbished engine with an other gearcluster , one new inlet valve and other crankshaft bearings.

Thanks for sharing, Rene! That's the Dutch proud of early years. Unfortunately, the Dutch government is discouraging the motorsport due to environment regulations. That's the reason that there are only a few Dutch riders at the (sub)top.

I is so funny to see both older guys at the vid enjoying their passion. The big smile of Wil Hartog was so recognizable.

5th Place last race in Assen , with a 4 seconds faster laptime than ever before on Assen.

Last fastest lap on Assen was a 2.08 and now a 2.04.
Yrjo made a good start but in the first corner he was pushed outside the track by another rider and came into the artificial turf.
So he lost a lot of places , but I saw already that he was very fast and lap after lap he passed many riders.
In the last lap in the last corner he passed the rider in front of him by very late braking.
This was the last race for the Dutch classic championship in 2011 , Yrjo finished 7th total and had two DNF , this on a list of 38 riders.

We made a big progression this year , on al the tracks Yrjo was much more faster than last year with the same engine tuning.
The biggest improvements were the chassis changes , such as the steeringhead reinforcements and the longer swingarm , the total bike setup was higher by putting the rearshocks forwards on the swingarm and give them more preload.
We changed the rider position , put the seat higher and lowered the footrests.
This all together brougt a good stable and handling bike and a big confidence for Yrjo.
For next year we have some ideas to make the bike faster and lighter.

Congratulations on a very good season. Wow 4 seconds a lap is indeed huge, and if it's partially the result of chassis tuning and rider comfort, your work has really paid off. Something tells me Yrjo probably gets credit for improving too!

nice to know that you put the head bracing idea to good use. did Yrjo feel the difference?

I am not that surprised on shaving 4 secs off actually. After three seasons I was lapping 6 secs faster on the track where i had my first ever race on.

The problem is that the next 4 seconds are going to be much harder to get! It's called the learning curve

Still pretty amazing that it's a BSA pushrod single doing all the winning in your series. A bit like the guy on a pushrod Morini 500 V-Twin leading the championship here this year. Guess that's the beauty of vintage racing.

Man those guys are really throwing the money at their scoots aren't they (more than any racer already does)? BSA, Morini, those things parts have got to be getting scarce.

Money yes, but regarding parts, not a huge issue.
The dutch guy is running the replica BSA Gold Star motor made currently by ABSAF. These new race motrs cost 12K$ mind you... http://www.absaf.nl/ then add to it a nice Seeley frame too

The Morini builder in Italy manufactures most of the important stuff himself, crankshaft, complete heads, cam, etc.
Rumor has it he is threw a few dozen of K$ just in engine development/work.

Kudos to the Morini guy. For the other fella...it sounds like he's getting a good return on his investment. Though to a degree, I wonder if it feels like he's buying his success, rather than earning it? I think I'd cheer for the Morini guy.

Just to give you a perspective, the top bikes currently dominating vintage 500 Grand Prix class like the new G50/Manx/Paton replicas cost 50-100K$....

By comparison, a 5K$ CB based racer is indeed a bargain
