Harley & Honda *Side By Side*
« on: December 26, 2009, 04:50:24 PM »
Two completely different styles - 1997 HD Wide Glide - long, low, and lean. 1976 Honda CB 750 - short and stocky. Right now all my spare time is spent on the Honda, but I love both bikes. They run and handle so differently. What style do you like? Like I've said in other post, when I get the money I want factory pipes and factory seat back on the 750. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

This is not a Harley bash, but if you've seen one cruiser, you've seen them all.  I can't tell one Harley model from the next.  I get plenty of comments when I ride my Honda.  I have a 550 which I think is more classic british styled than the 750.

I think this thread needs to take a turn towards the 'motorcycles are better than (most) women because....' direction.

The 750 obviously doesn't mind shaing you with the harley.

(I won't even mention the gravel driveway, every owner of american or british bikes should be issued one...)

;D but seriously, having more than one bike is what it's all about for some of us.

HARLEYS, You either luv um or hate um. The HD I've had about 10 years. The 750 only a few months, but I forgot how much fun these SOHC 4's are to ride. Im not new to Honda's having had a half dozen or so through the years - My last being a 1976 CB 550 which I sold about 30 years ago. Like the old saying goes if I knew than what I know now all my old Honda's would still be in my garage. Well that's life....

Nice Glide. My garage is shared by my 75 CB750F and my 03 Harley Fat Boy. I think they compliment each other nicely too.

You know, the thing about them all looking the same, has anyone noticed the distinct similarities between 1969 to 1976 CB750K's?! I doubt anyone other than 750 SOHC4 owners aficionados can tell a sandcast from a 70 K1 or a 76 K6 and maybe even a 77 K7. The colors even often overlap one year to the next. That's one of the main reasons, other than better performance, I bought my 1975 Cb750F.

Take DHall's post for what it is. He has 2 nice bikes and loves them both. Do you love both your bikes if you have 2 bikes?!

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I have 5 bikes.  Well, one is a dirt bike.  Right now my '04 HD 883 Sportster Custom is the only registered one.  So, when I'm not working on the CB350F, the Yamaha XS750D or the CB650C, I'm riding my Harley.  I love each bike for what it is and how it is different from the others.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)
        1981 CB650c Custom with '79 engine (wifes)
        1981 CB650 engine
        2004 HD XL883C Custom
        1977 Yamaha XS750D (in progress)
Then 1972 CL175
        1964 Yamaha YGS-1T

I dig HDs, but a new one would have to be non-stock (except for the XR1200)  New ones all look the same, too much chrome.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I've had my Harley for 10 years and I love it but I fancied something a bit different so this year I started building a CB550 from parts.

I'm hoping the Honda will be the polar opposite to a Harley; small, light and smooth as opposed to big, heavy and vibey.

I still love my Harley though!

To each his own, I say. Now, myself, I'm not a Harley guy but then I was raise around the Indians (the original ones). So, what do I know?  :)

Yours is a pretty good looking bike though. Myself, my different style of bikes that I have, are the 80' Honda CBX  AND the 83' Kawasaki GPZ1100 (can't afford an old Indian OR the New ones either).

It's a Supertrapp 2 into 1 in brushed stainless. It sounds excellent and goes pretty well too.

I think most Harleys are good looking, but few stand out.  The XR1200 and Vrod really stand out.  A Harley with a Porsche engineered motor, I can't believe they don't sell more of them.  I was really sold on the XR after reading so much about it, until I saw it at the International motorcycle show in Nov.

I realize it's not going to have the same build quality as a Honda, but come on, WHY was there rust on the end of the mufflers and pegs already?  No excuse for that these days.  The new VFR1200F was looking fantastic on it's little turntable, btw.  Honda FTW!!

I bought a Honda CB550F new in 1976. Been riding it ever since.
I always wanted a Harley too.
In 1993 I bought my own 40th birthday present. A HD Wide Glide.

Everyone asked why I kept the Honda?

As stated:  " I'm hoping the Honda will be the polar opposite to a Harley; small, light and smooth as opposed to big, heavy and vibey". And they are such different bikes that I like them both for their differentness!

I have since added another 1976 550K to the group!

Can't own enough bikes!

You know it is kind of funny though. The locals all ride to Marcus Dairy (Danbury CT) Sunday mornings to show off their bikes to one another. The Harley guys and the Jap guys rarely mix. Folks look at my Harley and move on. One day I rode the Honda up there and was surprised by the group that walked around and around the bike. Some were reminising about the Honda they had owned and all were remembering the chrome fenders "back then"! All thanked me for bringing the Honda.

I like both bikes!

I rode a Fat Boy and Road King couple of times, and I absolutely do not understand why anyone buys those things. I do wonder what what  1978 CR 1000 would be like. Styling vise one of the greatest looking bikes ever IMHO.

For quite some time, I figured that IF I ever owned a Harley, it would be a Sportster cause I liked the look of them. Then back in about 2002, I worked on a friends New Sportster and made the comment that I had rode several different brands of motorcycles, but never had ridden a Harley. Well, he tossed me the keys and said, "Take off!" So, I did. it went great for a bit AND THEN, I went to make a turn with it. It was as if it didn't want to. ALL the other bikes I'd ever ridden gave no problem, but that Harley didn't want to cooperate. I don't know what it is, it just wasn't comfortable to make a turn. Even the CBX that I have, makes turns great. I don't know. ??? Maybe it's just me, I don't know?

We have 3 hondas and a sportster in the garage right now. I have to say, I kept my sporty as factory as possible because everyone else loads theirs up with chrome and I just don't dig that. I like it just the way it is. I only added a small chrome rack behind the single seat to haul small stuff and be able to put my saddle bags on when I need to. As for the hondas getting attention from the Harley clan... I rode Kit's into the HD shop to get some stuff for my sporty and the "new" bikers all turned their noses up at it when I pulled in. The older guys all came over and had all kinds of stories of when they had a honda. They looked under it, ran a hand over the tank and grips... They could appreciate a good bike, even if it wasn't a Harley.  8)
1969 CL350 Scrambler... almost done!!! Well, until something else goes wrong. :)
2006 HD 883 Sportster, stock. No use changing it, it's still gonna be a Harley.
