350f Brakes
« on: December 23, 2009, 11:57:23 AM »
so 1st thing after the holiday my front brake needs new life

Im going to get the rotor machined and drilled by a member here and braided lines from sling shot.

Now the two questions i have...

1) should i get a honda brand master cylinder rebuild kit or just a whole new modern mc and lever? if a new one which one, what size, tips?

2) should i replace the ring on the caliper?
and is this piston worth replacing too?

Some members have had good luck with these new fangled pistons.  Others swear by OEM.  How bad is yours?  And yes, you should replace the seal.  I have no advice concerning the MC.

rebuilt my front caliper, but did not have to do the MC. had my rotor drilled and resurfaced too.  once the pads bedded, it stops nicely, and no more squeal!!!
the caliper gasket is worth the few bucks to replace. be sure to clean out the groove it sits in so it seals well.
post us a pic of your piston. i was able to reuse mine.
Depending on the amt of corrosion, you might be able to gently clean it and continue to use it.

I have one of those pistons in my bike.  Works great, sold by a member here.  Definately replace the o ring in there, it can be a pain in the a$$ to get in so be patient.

Mine have worked ok and I didn't rebuild them.  Does it leak anywhere?  and obviously as long as it isn't frozen...

I can't say thet there was anything wrong with my MC, but I rebuilt it just because it seemed like a good idea. I would deffinitely go with oem rebuild kit or maybe K&L. I first used a cheap rebuild kit and the supplied piston was poorly machined. I didn't work well so I got a honda rebuild kit and all everything's fine.

As long as you have your caliper off the bike, make sure you grease the caliper pivot. I also replaced the spring with a new one from the hardware store since the old one was too weak to do its job.

Other things to consider are the brake pads themselves and the condition of the rubber hoses.

Regarding the master cylinder, the stock one should work OK if all other components are in good shape, but a modern one with a slightly smaller piston diameter can offer a dramatic improvement in braking power.

Its all about the hydraulic pressure ratio.....the area of the master cylinder bore versus the caliper bore.  That's the primary reason these old bikes have such a "wooden" brake feel, versus modern bikes.

BTW, below is a more evergreen link to any open eBay brake pistons auctions I have going.  Individual auctions could be expired by the time you read this thread.

thanks for all the pointers guys...
Kevin, can you give me more specifics of what aftermarket (modern) master cyl would work? (inexpensive is good)
