Gas Tank rust and removing tank emblems for reuse
« on: December 28, 2009, 05:57:14 AM »
I have a moderate amount of rust in my tank and would prefer to not use POR-15 or Kreem. Can someone recommend a product I can get to get rid of the rust and seal the tank? Apparently in Massachusetts the radiator shops can't re-seal tanks, my local one told me it was "against the law" because of whatever they used to use.

Also, how can I get the emblems off of the tanmk to reuse in the future? thanks

There was a post on a  toilet cleaner someone was using they got at wal-mart. I can't remember the name of the  product  strong, but it had a stronger concentration of muriatic acid ( hydrochloric acid) and they claimed it worked better than anything they had used,

I would put those two names of the acid into search along with 'takn' and see what comes up. It's there.

You might be thinking of The Works toilet bowl cleaner.  Various people here have used it with good results to remove the rust.  Don't over-do it and dissolve your tank!  :)

If you don't like POR-15 or Kreem, alternative products would include Red-kote, Gold Standard, Hirsch, KBS Coatings, and Caswell.

Oh, and for the emblems, they usually have pins on the back that are pushed into holes on the tank, which have fingers in them to catch the pins and lock it in place.  Careful prying should get it off.

If there's double-sided tape behind them, use a piece of dental floss, hold one end in each hand, work the floss under the end of the emblem, and then pull while using a "sawing" action with the floss to cut through the tape.

The Works rings a bell.

I used that stuff too.  The problem I had is that I never was able to stop it from flash rusting...  no matter what.  I fogged it with WD 40, put 2 stroke oil in it, filled it with gas right away...  nothing.  As mentioned, it has the potential to eat pinholes (or larger) through a rusty tank though.  The only thing that worked for me was to use The Works and seal with a POR-15 kit.  That kit comes with patching material that I was fortunate enough not to need.  In a post I have somewhere here, I wondered if it was feasible to derust with The Works and go right to the sealer.  I bought a can of US Standard sealant (comes in the POR-15 cycle tank kit) for $15 by itself but haven't had time to experiment with my spare tank yet.

I just used the plating method described in a thread I read on this forum using a manual battery charger and saltwater as an electrolyte. Worked pretty good but I still had black stuff in the tank. I got "The Works" from Wal-Mart, used it and almost eveybit of the black was gone. I rinsed with water, water+that green stuff and then I poured baking soda into the tank filled with warm water and rinsed with that. I rinsed with a quart of 91% alcohol I also got from Wal-Mart. I am pretty happy with the result. I got a tiny bit of flash rust, but I figure to put an inline filter on after the petcock and before the carbs so if some rust is left well so be it...not gonna buy that guys new OEM tank for 1100.00 bucks considering I paid 200 for the bike :o I may use the Works it again to get the rest of the crud out but who knows.
