There's a guy here in Portland, ME around the corner from my apartment that lets his Buell sit out year-round. No cover, rain, sun, sleet, sleet, snow. He has a garage too, but he keeps his lawn mowing equipment for his business in the garage. Bike looks pretty good for being out all the time. I'm surprised it hasn't been stolen yet. Still abuse, even if it is just a Harley engine in a sport-bike frame.

Honestly I could careless how someone treates their stuff as long as it doesnt affect me. From one buell rider to another I would just warn the guy of his wheel bearing.. especially if he has the first gen orange ones. Not at a lot on these bike rusts besides the exhaust and a few engine parts.

I just wait for people like this to get bored of stuff they dont really care for and buy it off them.

I could NEVER do that. If you can afford a couple tanks of gas, you can at least afford a $20 cover from JC Whitney.

The problem of bike covers is that they often form condensation on the inside of the cover, every morning that dew forms, or the inside of the cover is warmer than the outside.
That makes a nice humid, wet environment that promotes corrosion.
This is largely the same reason that sealed bags often contain dessicant, to absorb the remaining moisture inside the bags.  So, don't think a cheap tarp is going retard the corrosion on your bike, it often traps water and accelerates the corrosion, unless you can circulate warm dry air inside it.

that's like someone having a sportscar with the door unlocked and people sitting their kids into the drivers seat to take pictures.

nobody does that, so why would they sit on a bike....
I would like to add to this post. No one does that unless you own a 1969 Dodge Charger dressed up like the General Lee(which I do) Trust me people do this. I've been at car shows before and heard my horn being blown by some idiot who doesn't know any better than to not touch what isn't his.

there's a ducati 850GT (early 80's) a few blocks from our shop that i've been leaving"sell this to me" notes on for years... iron disks are rusted up of course, all control cables are seized, seat's split and rotting out... and the guy has a garage right next to it.

A friend of mine was driving past my house while I was at work this past summer, said he saw a lady lifting her kid onto the seat.  I don't get it.

Another time I heard some noises outside my window (where I park my bike), looked outside to see a group of little buggers around my bike, one of them was twisting the throttle.  They were gone by the time I got dressed and outside.

Every time I pass by that Ducati I think to myself, why is that bike still sitting there?

About a year ago I saw a 1975 Ducati 900SS on Craigslist in Ohio (from memory) going for 500 bucks. It had about 6 inches of snow on it in the pic taken in the owners back yard, and I could see that there was also grass growing thru it.

I emailed the seller the same day that the ad went live, but he'd already sold it, and "couldn't believe how many folks had been interested in that old bike?".

It had sat outside for years and was probably buggered, and just reinforces my theory that some people are just oxygen thieves, and don't deserve to live................ ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I thought you parked all your bikes out in the weather Frank? Actually, the 860 GT engine with the springer heads was a better engine than the 900's "Desmo" engine, my 900SS looked great, but engine wise, was a fragile POS. ;D

When I take my 77 Monte Carlo to a car show, I roll the windows up half way to keep the idiots from reaching in to play with the swivel bucket seats or trying to get a better look at the 8 track player.  Took my BSA Lightning to a show and had a guy want to play with the ticklers on the carbs.  What really gets me is when you say something ,they get offended, like they have a right to touch.  And of course I love the people who come to the shows with the kids and just turn them loose to run wild.

It has just about come to the point that when I do a car show I have someone sitting with the car or I'm there with it. I trust no one at these events. Its like they buy a ticket to  get in and leave their brains at the gate.

carb tickler?

External plunger on top of each carb that pushes the float up and down. It was used on lots of bikes (and lawn mowers, and even some vintage cars) before chokes were fitted. You'd "tickle" each carb until a little fuel ran out, then kick it over until it started, or (in the case of most BSA's) until your leg fell off. ;D

my BSA has choke and the tickler, and i would do without either. my '71 bonnie had just the tickler (most people disconnect the choke), and you'd just tickle, kick through a few times WOT, then it would start first kick with the ignition. my A65 needs the choke until it's fully warm.

My Lightning has a Boyer ignition on it.  Tickle, key on, find compression, one kick and she is off and running (mine has no choke either).  Both my legs are still attached and both are the same size.  ;D

tell me about it.  Me and the g/f took out bikes to dinner and she saw someone sitting on my 999.  He got mad that i just about beat the #$%* out of him for sitting on it...he didn't understand why i was mad...which made me even more angry.
