omg!.....there was a guy that did the same thing to a 2003 honda  cbr600, but he actually lest it out there for TWO seasons!! i was so pissed out about it and at the time i wanted crotch rocket, so i was planning on taking it, just so it didint have to endure more snow, ice , rain, rotting leafs...the works. But i didnt do it and after two years of it sitting out side one day it was just gone, someone else probly stole it!......w/e the guy that owned it didnt deserve the bike anyways.

Freezing temps and water will put a crack in those seats in no time.
Frozen water/snow is far worse than rain... but I'd still not leave a bike in the rain either.

what's all that white stuff? fallout?

my bike is in the garage, but I don't have a door, so every morning there's heavy dew all over everything in there.

There's a guy here in Portland, ME around the corner from my apartment that lets his Buell sit out year-round. No cover, rain, sun, sleet, sleet, snow. He has a garage too, but he keeps his lawn mowing equipment for his business in the garage. Bike looks pretty good for being out all the time. I'm surprised it hasn't been stolen yet. Still abuse, even if it is just a Harley engine in a sport-bike frame.

That moisture on your stuff isn't technically "dew." Dew can only form in the open, which is why if you park or camp under a thickly leafed tree you won't have dew on your car or tent in the morning. It's a trick I use in the winter to keep frost off my windshield. If I park under a lot of branches or a pine tree with thick boughs, no frost. Same with camping. Want a dry tent? Camp under thick foliage. Not sure exactly why this occurs, but in your case, I believe "condensation" would be the correct term for the moisture on the stuff in your garage. I get it too on my timing cover and clutch cover on my Honda, and the primary, timing, and outer gearbox cover on my Triumph when they're in the garage, even with the door closed. Sorry, been drinking cutty sark and feeling technical.  :P

in a 'Florida winter' it gets cold at night and hot during the day, causing condensation in my garage that stays there till about 1pm.

I guess I meant condensation.   it's on my gas tank too, but only where the gas is (how I know if I need to get gas in the morning) ;D

That moisture on your stuff isn't technically "dew."

Yes it is.

definition:
water that has condensed on a cool surface overnight from water vapor in the air; "in the morning the grass was wet with dew"

Hot air has the molecules spread father apart, which allows more space in between to hold water molecules.  Cool the air and the molecules get squeezed out, making fog and clouds.  A cold surface cools the air and provides a surface on which the water molecules can precipitate and condense.  Dew is generally pervasive outdoors, but sheltered areas can make microclimates that diminish dew formation.

BTW, the condensation that forms on the outside of your beer glass and the inside surfaces of your engine case, gets there by the same principle.

There was a little 250 nighthawk sitting outside here for a few years, uncovered, under the pine tree... ended up dry rotting the tires off, full of sap, stuff leaking out, seat ruined, rusted... we offered to buy it to restore but his wife got all offended because "it is in perfect condition and is worth 10x that amount". yeah, right lady.  ::) It's gone now so either they moved or someone stole it.

I believe it is more the speed that the molecules "bounce" around, then it is the space between them...faster moving molecules suspend more water vapor in the air solution.  Temperature is an indication of molecule/atom velocity.

I have found that consuming beer quickly reduces condensation.

Why not hang a tarp or two across the opening, that will fix that problem.   ;D

A stupid friend of mine had a cherry 1967 pontiac Firebird convertable in top shape.  Original paint and interior. He was transfered to NYC and could not take it.  I offered to buy it and return it to him for the same price if and when he wanted to buy it back.  Noooooo he would rather leave it uncovered in another friend's back yard. Last time I saw it it was full of leaves top rotted interior ruined.  What a dips@@t.

disgusting story wardenerd.
a friend and I bought a 66 impala SS for 100 bucks, it was under  3 inches of rotted leaves.
turned out to have a 4bbl holley, 327/283 power pack heads, a B&M kitted th350 and chrome baby moons. the interior was great after cleaning and the baby blue paint polished up real nice.
we started it that night with a spray of gas in the carb.

moral of the story? tell me where that car is dude.

Not a meteorologist in the bunch.  :P

Dew is a result of the surface temp of the object it forms on combined with the amount of water in the air. As objects cool at night they radiate heat and moisture in the air and water condenses on the surface. (heat always go to the cold never ever the other way around. 2nd law of thermodynamics, and the first law of the universe higher order to lower order). Anyway if the air is relatively cold enough you get frost or ice.

The temperature at which dew forms is called the Dew Point. If for some reason you have a lot of water in the air and there is a sudden cooling of this air you get Fog sort of spontaneous dew that then settles on everything. Hence the camping under a tree you don't get as wet.

Warm air can hold more water because there is more distance between the molecules to hold the H2O and they are moving faster. Cold air is denser and slower moving thus condensing (squeezing if you will) the water out more easily.

Never take off from Denvers airport with a fully loaded plane on a hot day. You might crash like my daughters plane did. (no one was harmed the landing gear were crushed but thats all, Oh and the smell inside the plane from the...well you know...everyone was scared) More molecule of air densely packed together give lift hot air doesn't.

just a bit of science form the 9th grade...if you were paying attention! ;D
