New drum kit... best internet music lesson sites?
« on: December 29, 2009, 06:31:32 PM »
I've played a few instruments but its been over 15 years.
Always wanted to wail on the drums and the wife bought me a kit for Christmas!   :)
Since I'm new to drums I was wondering if any of you could point me to a good free music lesson site, or at least some good youtube tutorials.

Or maybe
some of you drummers would like to offer up your own tutorials and post them here.

I'm a total noob at this, feel free to tell me how to hold the sticks or do a roll.
Let's hear it!

And... Thank You.

Work on your syncopation first, it makes it a whole lot easier to pick up drums if you can do different things with both hands and feet. Also to make it easier on everyone around you, get some rubber pads to sit on the drum skins, it tones down the noise quite a lot which helps you not worry too much about making a horrible racket..Just google "drum tutorials" there are thousands online....I learned to play 30 years ago and found it easier to just watch someone else play.....especially left handers, its a mirror image of what you are trying to do.

Drummers take lessons?

I thought that was the instrument you were forced to play in band when you didn't have the skills to play anything else.  ;)

Oh no, we're not going to start seeing drummer jokes on the SOHC site, are we? I can't believe it's beginning here too.

Needs a lot of polish.
The tops of the cymbals look like crap, what should I use?  Thought of using the buffer I originally bought for the car but have not used.

You can buy Brass polish, probably better to use something specifically for the job..

Drummer joke.....

Why do drummers leave their drum sticks on the dash board.?

so they can get the disabled parking spots..... ;)

Precisely what I was thinking... used to use Brasso on the trumpet.
I figure if I was always fighting over first chair trumpet all through school, I might be able to keep a beat.
Wii Rockband kicks my ass though.   8)

i learned by listening to my favorite bands in headphones and just trying to play along... it was easy stuff: GNR, sex pistols, minor threat, etc.. this was 1987ish and i'm still playing with the same guys now. might not be jon bonham, but i do get to travel the world for free...

The sun is NEVER going to come up!   8)

Tommy flew his set directly over my head during the Dr. Feelgood tour.   ;D  That was awesome.

The Lord of the Rings tom tom beat (at least it sounds best on my floor tom) keeps flowing off my fingertips.  Could be worse.   :)

I've been watching drum videos for hours.

Now I've moved on to cymbals... the Paiste 802 ride cymbal is fine but the 18" is cracked.  Sounds ok, but why settle?
What to get to spruce up the kit...?

Also need new drum heads.

drill a tiny hole at the beginning of thr crack, lightly braze it then. it works good about half the time. i think the trick is not to use too much heat.

I somehow did a decent job of teaching my daughter how to play when she was little. I had a couple of records that featured the drum parts clearly enough so you could hear how the simple patterns worked. One was a Booker T best of record, and the other was an Albert Collins record, Iceman. I put the records through a pa system that I use in my studio, but a regular stereo system would work fine too, so that my daughter could play along. As she started to get the patterns right I would mute the record so she could keep time without the record, then un-mute it so she could hear if she fell back into the time correctly. I'm sure there's a jillion ways to start, but I hope this helps.

Cool gift!  8)

I recieved a kit about 10 years ago for x-mas as well. Never had any formal instruction...but before you start teaching yourself some bad habits, I'd recommend some instruction...or at least follow along to the online vids. It's much harder to get taught properly after having taught yourself.

I also started recording myself and playing it back to listen for problem areas. This is a cool thing to do because you can hear where you're making mistakes....and hear how good you acutally sound which is really encouraging.

 Cheers, Matt.

Now there is a role model for you. Joey Jordison is the best drummer in modern metal! Go to YouTube, seems to be a good source for tutorials... Save the Slipknot for a little while. I would definitely call that advanced! Listen to "This Calling" by All That Remains. Great drum track.

I played trombone in school. The chicks dig it. Especially when you open up the spit valve to drain it!!!

In an angry fit of rage, over a spat with a girlfriend, I smashed my first trumpet to bits on the driveway (I had another much more loved vintage Conn Constellation).  I never thought about the spit valve since.   :D
I might be better suited to bang on some drums, and no, I don't beat my wife!  And, yes, I have a little bit better handle on my temper now, thank you.   ;)
