Anyone read Japanese?
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:34:38 PM »
My partners GSX400 has 5 lights in the dash, indicators, Hi beam, Neutral, Oil and one more I have no idea about?
While riding today the mystery light came on, she was accelerating heavily in 4th gear and it stayed there for 5th and only went away when she hit 6th, she was in a bit of a hurry...I was right up her arse. ;D
I was guessing it is an over rev light or some such thing, it's written in Kunji I think, picture is poor quality sorry but the sun is so damn bright right now and it's 7pm in the evening!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I may have to get a clearer shot of that area first, I've asked the guys on NZBIKER forum too as they have a lot of GSX listed.

After taking the Jafacycle for a ride today I can see her problem, at exactly 80 kmph that red light comes on in any gear, did they build jap bikes with governors on them?
Speedo goes up to 180 kmph but even I couldn't screw any more than 80 kmph out of it and believe me I tried. ;D

I hear that Japanese Domestic Market 750's had a warning light that came on when you exceeded the speed limit.  Perhaps this is the same thing.

Found this:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/116185-82-GSX-400L-dash-light-question

They same the same thing: "its a speed warning light, was a japanese requirement back in the 80's.

now they are smarter and have a speed restricter instead

if you dont like it,just take the bulb out,i wont tell anyone"

It sounds like this one is restricting as well though if you can't get it to go over 80 kmh.  That's, what, 55 mph?  Lame.  There's got to be a way to disable the governor.  If it were mine, I would definitely find out how.  Quick google searches aren't coming up with much.

I found a diagram for the signal generator that shows a governor in it, but apparently this assembly controls spark timing, so disabling the thing would be a non-option.  Maybe a mechanical modification that could be done to it?

Signal generator diagram: http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gsx400-1981-tx_model13632/partslist/FIG-20.html
Info on the signal generator: http://www.wiringdiagrams21.com/2009/10/22/suzuki-gsx400f82-signal-generator-circuit-diagram

edit: Looks like "derestrict" is the keyword you're looking for.  Without knowing what year the bike is, it might be possible to buy a different ignition for it to remove the speed restriction.

Just disconnect the wiring to it, that should do it...

I believe that in the 750, the light is triggered by a mechanism in the speedometer, which makes sense.  Begin your search there.

Hush,

It means "speed alarm light" - this is the literal translation. I had one of my Japanese friends to translate it for me. She then asked.."is this anything to do with motorcycles?"  ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like an interesting bike in any case!

Happy New Year,
cheers

Hi Hush, if it has a restricted ignition unit {CDI}, you should be able to buy one through your local bike shop.

Hi Mick, I'm gonna play around a bit with the bike to see if it is restricted or something else, jaffa says she can get over 90kmph out of it and that is OK for our 100kmph roads.
