CJ250T questions
« on: December 23, 2009, 10:04:01 PM »
A CJ250T is available on C/L near me.  It is in the process of being turned into a cafe, and needs quite a bit of work to get there.  I am considering buying it, but I am concerned about the power.  If I were to buy it, I would want to increase the displacement to at least 300cc.  Does anyone have experience with these engines?  It is a 1971 CJ250T.

Thanks,
Camelman

ive been looking at the same bike for my old lady. there are a lot of issues that go with it. it is widely known as one of the crappiest hondas made. kickstart only, 27 hp and 5 spd topping out at less than 85 (perfect for my old lady) that and it weighs over 400 lbs. ive been kicking it around for weeks, no pipes, doesnt run... and its been on cl for months... we'll see how xmas goes.
as for boring it out, better off doing it to a different sohc. its a lot of money to spend on a bike that that will never bring in a grand.... imo.

You can see it here:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/1520057256.html

I'm looking for a bike for my roommate.  I think she'd be better off with a more mainline twin though.  The CB350 and CB360 are hard to beat, especially with the 6-speed on the 360.

Have either of you seen the CB350F that just showed up?  I think it is sold already, but it looks mint with the stock pipes.

Only difference 250 to 360 is cylinder with piston kits and jetting
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Is that really all the difference between the 250 and 360?  Would I be able to swap a 360 engine into the existing engine mounts?

Hmmmm...... lotta interchangeability questions ripping around here...

I thought the 250 and 350 were the fraternal twins (other than bore size) not the 250 and 360.  The 360 was a complete update over the 350.  Lots different, including 360-degree crank vs. 180-degree crank; different cam bearing setup in the 360 over the 350 - worse in the 360.  Some parts of the 360 are completely unavailable nowadays.

The 250 will be a challenge parts-wise because it was never sold in the US.  Canada and overseas only.  Makes parts here in the US tougher to come by.

A bike for your roomate to ride?  I'm thinking you'd be better off with a rider rather than such an uphill project...

Good luck with it, whichever way you go.

Hey all, found this thread as I was doing some research on the same bike everyone is talking about....I've got access to all the parts I'd need to finish this bike, and am really interested in it for a radical cafe project I've been planning. I'm starting welding school this month and this bike would be a perfect skeleton to work with.

I'm not asking anyone to NOT try to buy the bike, I'm just expressing my interest in it as a full strip-down project since as mentioned before it's got a long way to go before being even just an average daily ride...

All I'm asking is that you take that into consideration...

thanks!

hope everyone has a great holiday season!

I was just interested in the cj as how they compair to the cb's.  At least with the 360 it seems to be a ecomomy version.  On the 360 the cj seems to be a economy version.  Drum front no starter and 5 speed instead of the cb's 6.  The cj's seem to be very rere also.
A member her sent me pics of his CJ.  Nice bike but way diff styling than the cb.

CJ 250 and 360 are pretty much identical.
I have a lot of experience with them, posted my 391 conversion a few times.
The early CB250/350 are similar, when engine got redesigned around 1973 the 250 was really just sleeved 360.
I put 1975 6 speed transmission in it out of a CB, used CB tank and 14mm overbore.
RD350 28mm carbs, Maico rear fender, XT350 bars, GS125 headlight, made a seat from steel sheet and a newspaper delivery bag, side covers are from aloy sheet cut out of scrap refrigerator truck. Bunch of other stuff that I forgot.
Most expensive part was tyres and insurance.

Here's pic again

I bought this bike from Josh today..He's a real stand up guy...I'm sorry if anyone was really wanting to pull the trigger on it, but I just couldn't pass it up. My sisters fiance is from the UK and would LOVE this as a wedding gift!

wish me luck with the build!

sorry again if I snatched it from under your feet---

Just kidding, I decided against it.  It was too much of an uphill battle for me right now.  Good luck with it, and post pics as you go along please.

Heres my cj250t back in 1986 bought it off a mate of mine for £75 stripped it down to a bare frame painted it all up & with the help of another mate built and mounted a sidecar to it, so i could pass my motorbike test on it, had some bloody good fun with that outfit i used to be able to lift the chair wheel whilst riding down the road on 2 wheels  8) cheers Mick

Hi Mick
Thank You for the photos. I have been thinking about building some like that to hang off my avatar. I would have a bike ramp as well as a box. I think that it would do most of what I do with my pick up truck.
