anyone done a similar thing to an old air filter?tear all the paper out and with a soft flame the whole cage falls apart so you can get it real clean, then with your favourite two part glue reassemble it in three or four stages, then fashion filter foam you can oil wet and reuse over and over.

It's not worth the trouble. Moreover foam filter elements don't filter as well as paper. If you compare a filter that filters 99,8% with one that filters 99%, enginewear increases already by a factor 4. Maybe you should read this:

Dunno what $$ you guys are talkin' about. Here are some prices (UK) that I consider reasonable for genuine parts.
At David Silver a filter for my CB500 will cost me US$ 23,97 (€ 19,04) for genuine and US$ 15,51 (€ 12,32) for a good imitation. For CB 550K/F a genuine Honda will set you back US$ 24,68 or € 19,60. That's € 3,35 cheaper than mailorder Louis asks for an imitation(!) All genuine filters are available though Honda BTW and you'll find imitations at several mailordershops like Louis.
