Case Split -- Bolt Question -- Pic. Please Help -- Update
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:02:34 AM »
Trying to split my cases, this bolt is REALLY fighting me. Does it come all the way out? It comes out about this far and gets real tight. I'm afraid I'm gonna break someting. Any help greatly appreciated.  Thanks !

Yeah its gotta come out. If it breaks you'll get another chance at it with the cases split.  Can't imagine why it would be giving you resistance though. Hmmmm.

spray some loosenin' fluid down there and crank it in and out a few times, it may have something on the bottom of the threads.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Thanks. Yea I don't know all the other bolts have been coming out easy. This one comes out about a 1/2 in. then hangs up. Hopefully with some PB Blaster I can baby the damn thing out.

i recently had two separate case bolts snap on me on two different cases.  In one case I was really pushing hard on the bolt and in the other case I hardly applied pressure and it snapped on me.  Also it didnt matter what the other case bolts felt like...on case all the bolts were really a struggle and in the other case all the bolts gave way with almost no effort except for the one that snapped.

The only "noobish" advice I can offer is that when a bolt is giving me a little fight I take a rubber mallet and tap the socket handle with continous medium taps as apposed to just pulling  on the bolt as hard as I can.  In both cases where my bolts snapped I was tuggin on the bolt hard and I think the tapping method allows the bolt to relax for a split second or two and this makes it less likely to twist off...or atleast thats what worked for me.

Good luck!  I just spent $120 getting my case drilled and tapped! >:(

I'd say tapping the head of the bolt down into its hole with a hard hammer could help, shock the threads in a different direction.

Upon reassembly use some antiseize compound, for the next guys sake. Steel bolt in aluminum threads, not good.

I know.  I tried on my parts engine and really F**** things up  >:( so I didnt want to chance it again on my other case.  I took it to my local honda dealer and thats what they charged me.  I really didnt want to pay but it was worth my peace of mind cause Ive invested too much time in this project to have it screwed up my a crappy easy out.

Well I cranked on it till it finally broke. About 2 1/2 in. of the bolt came out, no threads. That one bolt was rusted and pitted bad. So once I flip this thing and get the bottom bolts out I'll go from there. Wish me luck!

Sorry about your broken bolt. I wonder if for future reference if a person had a bolt like that, that you knew would probably break,if it would maybe have been a better idea to have cut the head off and dealt with getting it out after the case was split.  ???
