Welding ?
« on: January 01, 2010, 01:48:20 PM »
Hey All,
I've been doing a little more welding and got an auto darking helmet with the welder. Opti something is the name. I was just out trying to lay down some nice beads and I have a hard time seeing the puddle. I have a miller 175 and was just praticeing like on a video I was watching. I called my friend who has had it at his house longer then I have owned it lol. I just got off the phone and he stated it is hard to see through it also kinda dark. It is set on 11 can I set the mask on 10 and not hurt my eyes is that what that is for is lightening up the mask to see a little better?

I believe that 10 is the average shade for non-auto-darkening masks, so you should be fine.

don't put your face in the weld
pull back a little bit to see the whole picture
and try not to lean on anything for support
there may not be anything when a good weld really counts

+1, I found that the quality of my welds improved considerably when I stopped trying to rest my hand or arm on something for steadiness.

OK, thank's for the tips. I now have shock mounts on my 8.8 in my Jeep XJ.
The flat beads are nice and easy. I will try some other than flat next weekend.

welds,, easy to hard.... Flat , overhead , horizontal then vertical up. If welding down hand vertical down would come after flat but can only be welded down hand up to about 1/8 plate.

It would be worth your time to take a night school class. I worked as a teaching assistant for a year when starting out and it was great to see newbies improve so much after only 10 weeks.

Some of us more experienced welders have noticed a cheater lens helps considerably. ;D

used a friends helmet that had one
didn't know it, thought in was going blind
those are good but you have to keep the same distance all the time or your vision gets blurred
