Wiring almost done ... just a couple of questions left.
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:14:49 PM »
This is for my 73 CB750K.

Well I am almost done with my wiring, just a couple of issues left.

First off thanks to the lad who originally suggested this method.  Sorry I can't remember who it was but it was one of the more detail builds.
It has helped me a great deal to understand the wiring and to work with the diagram.

I am confused about the wiring for the starter relay.
The relay pictured is from a 77 which is slightly different than what a 73 should be.

This is the diagram for the 77 pictureed.

This is what the 73 starter relay should be wired as.

Here are the wires from my harness.

I have the shielded red wire is more in the center, the yellow and red and the black wire are below it.

So I know the starter cable goes on the post further away and that is all that goes on that post.
The positive battery cable attaches to the other post as pictured.

My yellow and red I will splice onto the yellow and red on the relay.

So far it's simple.

But where do I attach the red sheilded wire and the black wire?

The green and red wire that is shown in the pic of the 77 relay goes to the clutch switch and is not part of the 73 diagram.

I'm thinking that the black wire and the sheilded red wire should be spliced onto this green and red wire.
But I am far from certain and at this stage I sure don't want to screw something major up.

I tried searching for a pic here and on ebay of what the 73 starter relay should look like but to no avail.

thanks

Gary

Yes.  Assuming the bar controls, etc, are stock.

Yes the bar controls are stock for a 73.
It took me a long time to track down some NOS left and right controls for a 73.

So the thick black cable with red on both ends from the 77 is discarded?

Does this make more sense.

The sheilded red/white wire from my harness ( see pic above ) goes into the red/white wire in this pic.

The yellow/red would connect to the same.

Then the black wire would connect to the green/red from the picture on the 77 relay.

The solenoid post has at least one connection back to the battery POS terminal.
That same post supplies power to the bike's Key switch, and the rectifier connection, (charging output).
It would appear that the 73 makes the connection of these four devices at different points. (not shown in your diagram).

I will warn you that the Honda Shop manual has a much better wire representation than the clymer diagrams.

The solenoid is functionally the same between 73 and 77.  Only the wire color changed black to green/red.  You could go the Hdw store and buy some black liquid vinyl to repaint the wire color.

Terrific, thanks.

I was staring at the Honda Shop Manual wiring diagram until my eyes crossed.
The black and white diagram was helpful but I wasn't sure.

Much appreciated.
