« on: December 11, 2009, 09:05:22 AM »
Hi All,
I wonder can anyone help me identify this bike that I have been offered - year, model etc

Are those the wrong wheels?

Many many thanks

cb400f... looks to be 75 or 76 based on the handlebars being lower rise than the 77.

They look like aftermarket mags, probably add to the value a few hundred bux..
casually ask the owner if them wheels are right ones, he may know what they are..

Very many thanks all.

This will be my first bike restore - I have done some amateur car restores in the past.

See attached my latest - a 1972 Mini that was all done in my back yard.

Can anyone notice anything else about that 400 4 that I might have missed

Very best regards

amateur

 ???

I doubt those mags add value... stock is value.
But that's just me being disagreeable.   ;D
It looks stolen... check it well.

Thanks Motley

I must say I veer towards your way of thinking - I have asked for the Frame number and reg for checking purposes!

Hi Mark

I guess you are in the UK looking at that Mini.

What info have you already had from the present owner? If it is going at a good price, then worth a punt. You can always break and sell on Ebay.
Go and have a good look, record engine number, frame number and registration, you can then do a cheap check on the history. You can also have a better poke around and see what needs doing as well as find out how long its been standing

Cheers

Hi Seamus,

Thanks for this

This is what I know from the owner thus far

HONDA CB 400/4 FOR PROJECT OR PARTS

HAS BEING COVERED UP IN BACK GARDEN BUT MUST HAVE SOME HANDY PARTS FOR SOMEONE ON IT.

WAS TOLD ENGINE TURNED OVER OK WHEN I BROUGHT IT.

IF I CAN FIND KEYS IT WILL HAVE KEYS BUT IF I CANT SORRY.

NO LOGBOOK BUT NUMBER PLATE.

NO POINTS COVER

NO FRONT BRAKE LEVER

OTHERWISE SEEMS PRETTY MUCH THERE BUT CAN,T GUARANTEE , PLEASE SEE PICTURES.

PICTURES MAKE IT LOOK BETTER THAN IT IS

It is very cheap and local to me - I was looking to do a complete restoration and try an build something really perfect - its not a money spinner just a winter project for my enjoyment - I don't fancy doing another car this year and thought that this might be fun.

It isn't that far from me so I'll take your good advice and pop along over the weekend for a lookee!

Thanks for your time

Mark

Some other things that aren't stock, in case you're curious:

Seat
Exhaust
Front fender
May be missing the stock fork brace that's part of the stock fender

What's that black cable-looking thing running around the back of the seat to just under the left side cover?

It does have the stock side stand, which is a bonus because it was fairly common for people to cut these off of the 400's.

Looks to be a UK model 77 frame. It was only the US model that had the high bars and the forward footpegs but kept the 75 frame and swingarm with the pass pegs on.

If the wheels are period aftermarket made for the 400F then they will be worth a few $'s.

Looks in OK shape compared to some that I have re-built.

I would say go for it..!!

Hi Mark
Did you know about the UK version of this site?

http://www.sohc.co.uk/

May be worth a visit for the UK view.

No -there were just too many unanswered questions - this one seems like a nice straight bike, the numbers match and everything seems cool with it!
