Work that head.....the power you are getting from this will go up 10-12% I estimate. ;)

Are you estimating according to pure displacement increases? Or taking into consideration displacement and compression? Hate to say it, but I know you're not taking into consideration the Surface Turbulence, as I can guarantee you have no experience with it. This will be the main source of increased efficiency and power.

hey pinhead read the "gentleman's express article, regarding the use of over sized pistons with little/no head-work.

Basically states highly ported motors get the extra HP, but only at narrow top end bands, and the un-ported bike will experience the power gain through the whole power band.
Pinhead is after MPG more than raw HP I believe anyway.

Now for the MAX. power, there is nothing like the holy trinity of:
a properly timed hot cam
big pistons
a good head job

I will not any have pics until I am done unfortunately.
Not taking the camera to work, and really hate transporting pistons unless I need to.


They are interesting looking though.

I have had to re-do my mill setup, and am going a bit more universal with this one.
Being able to un-clamp, and swap out the lathe fixture for the mill pocket operations has been on my mind.
I have finally came up with what I think is the easiest/most reliable I can do without any problems as to repeatability. SO only one more fixturing project to finish before the valve pockets are to be done.
I should have pictures by next weekend.

Well, the mill at work is up and running again.


Started on the mill fixture, and will be finishing it monday morning.
Valve pockets will be done soon.

This is good. I've acquired a set of 64mm Kawasaki 650 pistons for my (hope for) 550/673 conversion. Will be interesting to see what your results might be as this could be quite cost effective in dollar per horsepower.

Not 62mm?(the Kz650 pistons I have are 62mm is why I ask)
What year/make model they from?


IF they are the same KZ650 pistons I have, they might not be applicable for a 550.
(unless you are running a cb650 head that is)

Now that the mill is going, I am stoked about getting time to finish machining the other lathe fixtures for the other sized pistons soon!!

Yeah, the Kawasaki pistons are actually 62mm. I believe this is the most you can safely bore the CB650 cylinder before going to 750 liners.

Yup, your are right on the 62mm limit.
I have a post in the services offered area for piston machining.




Anyways, the fixture for the mill is done, and working well.
I have had to re-tool a bit, and re-designed my piston holders to accommodate the fixtures jaw height.


One thing remains mainly now.
I need to properly locate the center of the valve reliefs on the stocker cb650 pistons, position a locating dowel pin on the mill fixture, and writing a little program to circle interpolate the valve pockets.


I'm thinking the 62mm holder is next after these 750 piston mods are done.
Those 66's can wait.

Top set is for a cb550, on the far right is a stocker 550 hooked up to the cut 750 piston with a wrist pin between the two.

Bottom set is Pinheads "surface turbulence" pistons.
Note the rings......

Edit: I don't remember completely, will I need a new set of rings or are the ones that were with the pistons usable?

I need to get some pistons, and if you are boring cylinders, I have some work for you as well.

650 cylinders and 650 head for a 550 bottom.  Head is already enroute to MRieck.

Ok, gotta run but here is a sneak peak at some of my piston collection.

starting left to right:
top row
KZ650, KZ750 low dome, KZ750 high dome, 64mm??(CB350T??), 64.75(looks identical to the 64 in many ways, thinking it is a CB350T 3rd overbore piston set(s))

Middle row
std 550, cb750 auto piston W/ "Gentleman's Express" & 0.330 lift valve pockets, std 750 piston with same mods, std cb650 piston

Bottom row
cb650 piston modified to "Gentleman's Express" specs W/ clearance for 550 running a 650 cam, next as before but w/+2mm to the diameter where I started the 15 deg cut, third +4mm, fourth +6mm.

These are a set I have been waiting on someone willing to try them out, and recently found a racer looking for an overbore within the 5% of stock bore rule. These make it with room for a 60mm overbore later as well as having great potential for a high CR piston.
