Topic: kind of general question: will any wire drive type speedo and tach work?

Bottom line...I hate 1982. not just because I was not born until the following year, but also because the styling for most motorcycles in 1982 was horrendous...case in point being my gauges on the ole nighthawk. Anywho... I want to lower my headlight and gauges, but the gauges are so big and bulky I'd rather just throw them in a large barrel of fire. Will any conventional honda wire drive( dont know the real name!) speedo and tach function? I'd like to get some round individual units and fab some brackets up.

the drive ratio needs to be the same. earlier 650 gauges look nice, in my opinion. just like the 70's fours, but black faced.

I wonder how close the ratios are between 1980 and 82...

As far as I know all Japanese bike speedos use the same ratio (off the top of my head it's 2260rpm shaft = 60 mph but that's probably wrong).
the tachs are a different story. Honda under 500cc is 1:7 (I think) and over 500 is 1:4. Where an exact 500 fits in there, not sure... probably 1:4.
