2003 ducati m800ie
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:21:12 AM »
I am going to go look at a 2003 ducati m800ie

I think I can grab it for about 4 grand (maybe a little less if i'm lucky)

it has 25XXX miles on it and the dude claims it has bee dealer serviced the entire time.

I'm I crazy to go Ducati or am I just asking for expensive parts and maintenance costs? This would be my second bike ever after putting 10XXX plus miles on my 78 CB750 which is about to have the tranny rebuilt (by me, I hope?!!!)

Its just like the picture below except all black...It would be my daily driver (I am also thinking about going CBR 1000 route)

Check insurance rates on it before you buy it.

High cost parts and servicing is a myth - they're no different to other bikes really, you have some dealers who rip you off, some who are great. Ducatis on the other hand are the business (OK I'm biased, I have 5 of them)!  ;D

+1... for the most part.

Valve adjustment intervals are shorter than other bikes on the market and the process is a bit more involved making the cost of owbership a touch more. But only a touch, really. I have a 2000 M750. I LOVE IT!

I have a Monster 620IE.  Ducati's are initially not that expensive, you can get a used Monster for around $4,000.

The maintenance costs will kill you!  12k service is $1000.00......without parts.  I am also needing a new rear tire.  The total for both will be around $1,200.  I checked around at about 5 places, they all charge the same...if they will even maintenance Ducati bikes.

Ducait accessories, coats, etc. are very expensive as well.

That price is absurd...it's cheaper for me to pay for maintenence on my 996 motor...I do the belt change and valve adjustments myself but even with parts included my local dealer would have charged 5 or 600 tops. I wouldn't have them do it...but I know that's about the going rate for the 748-916-996 series bikes which are notorious for valve problems...the air cooled and 749/999 motors are known for being much more reliable.

Maybe the cost is due to I live in Ohio....and not too many Ducati dealerships around.  You rarely see Ducati bikes on the road here...mostly harley and GSXRs.

When the first place quoted me a price, my jaw hit the floor.  So I called around to 4 other places and if they did the 12k service it was about the same.

Call around and gets estimated on their service intervals before you buy the Ducati.  This may help you make up your mind.

I like the looks of the Ducati Monsters but I would look at getting a buell lightening, another 70's CB750, Cb550, kz1000, etc. first.  Especially if you like customizing/altering, etc.

A good leather Ducati coat will run about $400.00.  You may be able to get lucky on eBay though.

A friend of mine has a 748, recenlty paid around 2k for service maintenance and two new tires.

Just my two cents after having a Monster.

Thanks for the feed back...I am trying to go look at it ASAP...it turns out its a kid that bought it and his parent's will not let him keep it. He is the 3rd owner but has all the documentation and service records, the red key, etc...it looks really nice in the photos and has 25XXX miles on it...I figure I can grab it for less than 4 grand and it will be a great second bike while the 78CB750 is overhauled...crossing my fingers  ;D

I think you're assessment abut Ohio is probably correct Egor. We have a great choice in the UK - Ducati main "superdealers", Ducati dealers and Ducati specialists. The price for the same given piece of work goes down in that order. I stayed with a main dealer for all servicing for about 15 years and I routinely get 20% discount on parts and labour including clothes etc now. However, that hasn't stopped me doing some servicing myself on the 888 just because I can and that makes it cheaper. The specialists will do an excellent job at a fraction of the superdealer costs and often have many years of experience so you get real personal attention and focus.

Over the years I've owned and 851, two 888 SP5s, a 998, a 749 and three 1951 50cc Cucciolos. The only major problem I had with any of them was a burnt out regulator rectifier on the 851, all the others have been fantastic reliable bikes and believe me in the case of the first 888 SP5, I caned it for years around the isle of man. Not one serious issue, no valve problems and no major maintenance bills despite me sticking to the service schedules religiously.

I guess if you don't have the dealer choice locally, you have to be prepared to pay the rate for an exclusive bike or explore doing it yourself...

My father recently picked up one of these Foggy Monsters.  #77 of 300 built.
This isn't his exact bike, but it looks identical, down to the termignoni exhaust.
Its a wicked beast of a bike... just sounds cool!

He's had a few Ducs and never had an issue with any of them other than routine maintenance.
I think that many people equate higher dollar vehicles with higher dollar maintenance and parts.
That may have some truth to it, but not overly exorbitant for Ducati, would be my opinion.

Bought it and drove it home (2.5 hour drive) on the 405 and 5 in California. And let me tell you, after having only ridden a 78 CB750 for the past 2 years, I basically have to learn to ride all over again...that thing is insane! I really can't believe I own it. I am in shock...the road feels so much smoother and the power is seemingly endless

Reminds me of the drive home when I bought a 916 (that i later sold for the 748). I took the train down to NJ and road it back up to Albany from there...best ride ever! I used up so much gas just rolling on and off the throttle to hear the sound and feel that amazing torque curve over and over and over again hehe.

I am going to try and track them down from a past owner. But I'm thinking that I should have a Ducati dealer do a once over on it regardless...it seems to have a small leak also...ah I dream of the day of a non-leaking motorcycle

me too, my 999 has a slight valve cover weep on the verticle cyl....but it going in for it's 20,000km service pretty quick.

i would get a once over forsure. Belts are very cheap insurance.

join Ducati.ms to find a good dealer in your area.
