tank interchangeability
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:22:49 AM »
I thought there was a forum post or an article on the main site that listed part interchangeability but I can't find it.

I've got a 76 cb550 with a rusty tank (at least one pinhole) and I'm wondering if it wouldn't be easier to just get another one cheap somewhere.  Another CB or even non-Honda if that's what I happen to find in a junkyard.  Any other bikes have compatible tanks?

Anything will fit, it varies on how much work will need to be done to make it fit. I personally wanted larger fuel capacity on my 550 and I like the look of the larger tank. I bought a 750 tank and all I had to do was chop the rubber mounts on th frame in half, and tap the inside of the tank a little, I mean a couple mm, where the u hooks are.

I have an extra 750 tank if you're interested. It's already been cleaned and POR 15'd. I was going to have it painted and throw it on my bike, but I ended up finding the exact same tank with brand new paint! so I no longer need it. I also have the original 550 tank, but it need the kreem liner removed and needs a few dents filled.

Good luck

The easiest tank to put on there is another 550 or 750 tank. Some people have put on the 500twin tank, norton cafe look, but it involves cutting and welding.

Modern tanks have fuel pumps and wide holes that will need to be welded up and a bung added. There's a guy on here who put a cb919 tank on his bike, and a sport bike seat, too. (don't remember the name)

Like I said before, it's all about how much work you want to put in. Soldering up the pinholes on your tank and lining it would be pretty easy. So would a replacement 550 or 750 tank.

But no tank is "interchangeable" unless it's from a 550, and even then there could be problems (f or k).

I guess when I said fit i meant fit without modifications although something trivial like cutting some rubber bushings or a mount short wouldn't be a problem.  Seat fit wouldn't be a problem since I'd like to try my hand at making one and I've got an aftermarket one on my bike anyway.  The point would be to make finding a tank easier.  750 would probably be too big, i'd actually rather have a smaller tank, but thanks anyway.

I'll probably try to solder the holes shut.  The tank's not bad overall, it's mainly the one spot that I can see, but I have to get around to cleaning it out better first.
