Obtaining title with only Bill of Sale

Has anyone (especially Ohio) had to get a title from a Bill of Sale? I know there are some online companies, but they are expensive (up to several hundred dollars) and I don't know how trustworthy they may be. The person who I bought a bike from has been trying since last summer to get a title with no luck. It seems everytime he talks to someone at the BMV he gets a different story.

Basicaly in Ohio you apply at the main BMV headquarters, get turned down, get turned again at the county level, then make an appointment before a judge and he renders a decision one way or the other. Seems simple, no?

I've used these guys before on a motorcycle and a jeep.  The jeep had never been registered in its 44 years of existence, but they had not issues with it.  I was in IL for the motorcycle and SC for the jeep.

we just go into the dmv, show them the bill of sale, fill out some lost title paperwork, they look up the bike and send you a title in a few weeks, as long as it's not on a stolen list. simple. You need to find someone who can get you a title in another state and then retitle it in your state. any states near you that do it like Oregon?

Have any relatives in Michigan? We make it easy with a bill of sale and a signature. They run the VIN, if it has never been reported stolen you'll have a title in the mail.

This looks like a great place except for the not doing business in NC.

I guess the option is to have it titled in another state then transfer it to NC.

I had good success with International Title Service in NV.  Their rates did go up though but so did all the other from what I could tell.  I have a post here somewhere about it...

Thanks all, ITS and Broadway want almost as much as I paid for the bike itself!  it also appears that they do not actually issue a title, but a registration and bill of sale, which I already have, and then have you get your own title (which I am trying). Unfortunately the prev owner has passed away and it is compounding the difficulty.

Anyone in MI willing to lend a hand?

I believe the registration from Broadway is in your name.  That should make it easier.

I've seen the "as much as I paid for the bike" comment before.  It really doesn't hold much water because the bike would have been worth a lot more with up-to-date paperwork.

But in Ohio the registration only matches the tags to the bike, it does not prove ownership as a title does. I have a call into them to see how this may work.

I can't remember for certain but I don't think it was registered to me when I got my paperwork.  What I got was a current registration from a state that didn't issue titles on bikes of that age.  In my case, it came registered in Alabama.  Florida had to issue me a title since it was obtained legally and had a current registration.

I realize that state laws are different, but here in Mississippi I got a bonded title. I went to my insurance agent and was charged a rate according to the blue book value of the bike. The minimum charge was $50 so that's what I ended up paying. I took that paperwork to the courthouse, paid for a tag and a few weeks later got a clear title.

I just went back to ITSs webpage.  Many changes since I did it.  You now need to send proof of insurance, copy of your drivers license, and a VIN inspection too.  Price is way up:  $250.  I paid I think $85.  You do get a license plate though now regardless.  They have a new section for bonded titles that isn't populated yet.  Lot of changes.  Others I've seen  are Broadway (already mentioned) and Staab Agency...

*edit*  and now takes much longer too.  Says 3-4 weeks now.  I had mine in well under two weeks...

I just got a CB550 for free...great price.
The PO said he lost the title.
I stopped in at the CT DMV and they said with such an old bike the signed off (Bill of Sale) registration is good enough.  I'm thinking of registering it in Florida though. Wonder what their status is?

Was the registration current?  Florida is a real pain if you don't have a title.  Broadway is up to $350!   :(

Last registered in CT in 1983!
Maybe I'll register it in CT first and then in Florida.
