how old is the cd player and what program are you using to burn the disc. i use roxio creator, it's the best cd burning program i've ever used. it came with my computer BUT i might could burn you a copy and send it out to you.

Some CD players, especially older models, can't play all types of CDR's.  Are your blank discs "+R", or "-R"?

Hey Jeff, i've got roxio creator. A friend gave it to me after I swapped out the HD and couldn't find my disk for Nero.

Gordon, my cd player is older (maybe 10 years old) I've tried both types of cd's cdr and cdrw.
from what you've said I'm suspecting my cd player is to old to handle it because most of the burned cd's work fine in the car system.

There's CD+R and CD-R.  In my experience, when an older CD player has a problem playing one type it's normally the CD-R.

Usually when a cd player won't play a burned cd it won't play it at all from what I've seen, not some of it. Are you guys regularly seeing something else?

Not sure what your problem is but is the disk clean? And a general question that might...but probably not figure in is...When is the last time the lens was cleaned?

   Probably a disc problem though.

Is this happening to original CDs?

CDs read from the inside of the circle to the outside in a spiral. If your laser head has acquired a limit problem from mechanical issues, it will simply stop at a certain part. Check it with an original disc to make sure it isn't just mechanical.

Also, if it is an older one, which yours seems to be, maybe it can't handle the CDs that put more data on. Like a 650 compared to a 700. The 700, like a DVD, can use a more compacted laser beam path. Once it gets to a certain part of the CD, it just loses the bumps of data because it's too compact for it to understand. At least that's what I've been taught.

You do know that the info isn't closer to the clear side of the CD, but on the label side, right? If you mess with the label side, scratch it, whatever, it won't read again. The layer of gray for recording is right under it. The clear side, bottom, is thicker to protect it from the tray. You can make light scratches on that side, buff it clear again and keep using it. Make sure your label side isn't tampered with the whole way to the edges.  :)

Oh, I was just thinking... the other thing it could be... as your CD spins, the laser moves towards the outside edge. If your CD spin motor doesn't compensate for the outside data that is moving faster than the inside, it won't be able to read it. In other words, the spin motor needs to know when to slow down as the head moves toward the outside to keep the data spinning past at a constant speed it can handle. It could be just the more compact burn and/or it could be your motor isn't slowing down enough to read it.  :)

I worked on Cd players from when they first came out in mid '80's until 2007 when I decided consumer electronics was not paying for all the time I was spending in it.

Cleaning the lens with Q-tip soaked (more like just wetted) in alcohol.
MickeyX is right. Use a known good CD as your test. If plays through or not.
Often debree was found jamming the pick-up gears.
Different brands of Cd's might help.
Also try to burn at a slower speed also may help.
