We're in the $hit

Despite having the largest salt mine in the country just down the road, most towns and cities in the north west of England have exhausted their salt/grit stocks for keeping the roads clear.
At 4.15 am, I was out digging snow from my path to get the bins out (garbage) but I doubt they will get to us to empty them.
I'm not sure what time it started but at 4.15am there was about 7 or 8 inches and it's not stopped yet. >:( >:( >:(

Morning Mick, It was twice as bad in Boston but they don't have the problems we have.
They may close the schools but all the roads are kept open.
There's about 3 inches on my car now since 5am and it's still coming down quite heavy.

Well guys as one who experiences the white stuff every year, the advice I can offer is if the roads are dicey don't bother, no job is worth it and if you've got a true emergency call the cops or ambulance and let them figure out how to solve it, if that don't work then dress for the weather, when you go out, in the meantime that book you've been meaning to read, that dinner you've been thinking about, figure out how to cook it and mellow. When the weather is really crappy, huddle in your castle and throw another log on the fire, rediscover hot buttered rum's.

Yikes! I feel for you all.
It must be really difficult when you almost never get snow to have to deal with it all of a sudden. I imagine most people do not have shovels or snow tires right?

Hope it warms up for you in Arkansas.

Here it has warmed up a bit (upper 20F's) so I no longer have to scrape the ice off my beard after my daily run.  ;D

peace,

I bet you miss Boston now Sam ;-)

We had anywhere from 6 -10` of fresh snow over the weekend here in Boston and this morning I rode the VStrom to work  ;D. Why? Because the roads were ploughed straight away, super-salted and now they are dry it was pretty easy going even if it was 22F this morning. The only problem came this morning when I slipped on some ice going to my garage - my driveway is covered in snow.....

I then got to work and checked the BBC and saw a video of the icy roads in Scotland  :o :o. Shocking! I also saw the NY revellers who were stuck in the highest pub in Yorkshire....now that must have been tough ;-)

cheers
Andy

Still dry here in the South. But we've been told to expect a mega snow in. I've told my colleagues as soonas that white stuff starts coming down, I'm in my car and off home. Not staying here in the office until 9.30pm like the last time.
Salt? What for?? That was the answer we got from our local council when we asked them about gritting the sidewalks. Apparently, Brighton Hospital had a 150% increase in fractures come in to it's A & E the last freeze/snow fall. Especially older people. But, as usual no-one gives a toss.

Hell people in this region don't know how to drive in the stuff...I somehow make it to work fine in crappy conditions in my 2WD S10 with balding tires...yet on the way I see all sorts of trucks and SUV's off the road. Guess 4wd doesn't help you STOP faster does it?! Lol.

Now I have snows though and some sand bags....might take the Mini Cooper S out for a spin...i'm hankering for some e-brake turns!

youre not kidding. as a kid in connecticut, we were sent to school with a foot of snow on the ground, here people freak if theres even a tiny threat of snow. freak as in city and state governemnt shutting down, school canceled. i got my first driving lesson during a snow storm.

Very little snow here Sam, just cold and wet.

I rang British Gas today to sort out why they had sent me an email to say my on-line Gas payment had failed, when I phoned Customer Services a recorded voice told me all their offices were closed as staff had been sent home to support their families and aid travel home, on checking further I have found I am over £300 in credit on my Electric account, almost 3 times what I have paid them, looks as though the computers are playing games now the building is empty  ;D

It's GREAT being British when things stray from the norm.

Wished it would actually snow a bit more here.  We had a white Christmas but lasted only a day.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Light snowfall here during the day, nothing major. The forecast isn't good though, heavy snowfall during the night. Very icey and slippery under foot.
My brother managed to break his ankle pretty badly just before christmas slipping over on the ice. He's had to have plates put in on both sides, going to be out of commission for 4 to 6 months :(

My bike can be repaired.

I'm getting a kick out of all these yankee responses about folks not being able to drive in the stuff.
Neither can yankees. We average better than 2 feet a year here and most of the folks complaining are northern
transplants, who ain't prepared.

For the information of all snow drivers, the best snow tires are Bridgestone Blizzacks. :)
And if your dealing with ice these work great too, without studs.
