Evap-Rust - anyone used this stuff?
« on: January 01, 2006, 05:01:56 PM »
I just found out about this product - Evapo-Rust.

http://www.orisonmarketing.com/corrosion/evaporust/evapo-rust.html

From the web site: "EVAPO-RUSTTM is non-corrosive to steel and does not harm brass, copper, aluminum, gold, lead, titanium, steel, cast iron, chrome solder points, vinyl, plastic, rubber, silicone, glass, cork, or wood. EVAPO-RUSTTM has an indefinite shelf life* and can be used over and over until it absolutely stops working. On average, one gallon de-rusts up to 300 pounds of light to moderately rusted steel."

At $21 a gallon, it sounds promising.  Anyone tried it?

Haven't tried it yet, but the distributor is only about 10 miles away. Stay tuned.

I used a Quart a while back to derust a Waterbuffalo Tank and it done a great job.To derust a tank you have to make sure all of the Gas/Crud is out of it first. After the Tank I used it to Derust some Wrenches/Bolts ETC.Most of the Wrenches came out looking like Brand new.I had a set of Safty Wire Pliers that I found that had Scaley Rust flaking off and they turned out real Nice. They were rusted Completely up and wouldn't Move. After the Evapo rust they worked fine after a Small Squirt of WD40.This stuff will only Derust so much stuff though. The Last bolts I Tried didn't come clean.I guess it's time to Pick up another Quart at Auto Zone. ;)

Auto Zone carries it?

I was going to go to the distributor ($80.00 for 5 gallons) Auto Zone is probably cheaper.

Very impressive...Assuming this stuff works as well as all the website info says, what would you suggest I follow up with in my gas tank?  Would hate to see it go right back to previous state.

Yeap my Local Auto Zone Carries it.Look in the Bondo/Paint section.

To keep your Tank from rusting again.Hmm after cleaning it really well with the Evapo Rust Rise it well with water and dry it out very well.Get some regular 2 Stroke Mix oil and coat the inside of the tank very well until you use it next. When you store the Bike for Winter just top the tank off and add a little of the 2 stroke oil.For Extended Periods without anything in it "Fog" the Inside with some Sea Foam Spray. Some dessicant Packs on the Iside wouldn't hurt Either. ;)

If your worried with rust Seal your tank with some of this stuff.

I don’t know about Evap-Rust but I am in the process of trying electrolysis to remove rust on my back shock springs.  I will take photos and post with the results when I get everything together.

You can get the same results from "The Works"! It is a toilet bowl cleaner sold in dollar stores for $1 a bottle. (24 oz.) It contains Hydrogen Chloride which will eat away rust post haste. I restore old woodworking machinery and use it all the time. You can either soak the parts for awhile or brush it on and let it soak in and brush off the rust with a stiff brush.
I have also used the electrolytic removal with good results. all you need is a battery charger and some baking soda.

I got some misc. stuff soaking in Evap Rust right now. For small parts, even chrome ones, this stuff shows promise. It doesn't work instantly and some parts take longer than others like the article says. I just did a seat strap buckle that turned out good. Don't know how long it'll last at this point though.
$8.52 for a quart at Auto Zone. I'll post my results too.

I take this Evapo-Rust is used full-strength and not diluted. The article said whatever had to soak in this. I this is correct, would it mean one needs approx. five gallons  :o to fill and de-rust a fuel tank?

Phew, thanks, otherwise 5 gal of the stuff cost more than most tanks one might de-rust.

For anyone interested, I got pretty decent results after soaking some small parts in the stuff. I used a coffee can with plastic lid as a soaker and agitated occasionally. Started yesterday and finishing up today with some really rusted small parts that repuired over night soaking. Minor rust dissolves in less time of course, and some non chromed parts required the help of a scotch brite pad. Seems to hide, to some degree, small pits in chromed bolts, etc. but suspect they'll become more visible with time and exposure to humidity(?). A few parts were too rusted for even an overnight soak to restore. But then, there's always another night, eh? Not a miracle cure, but a good product I think. Good enough for me to consider it for derusting a tank, as suggested earlier in this thread. Thanks folks!  ;D
