demo-model of a Unisport

I found this on another cycle forum and I thought i would share.Its a demo model of a Unisport from 1973. awesome, but any idea how it works... or more importantly why?  :D

Looks like it'd be decently aerodynamic. Probably gets better mileage than the stock bike did even with the extra weight.
