I have a 1980 CB650C that I'm putting 73 750 carbs on (I hate the 650 carbs, total pita) This is a pretty easy swap asside from the intake side being a different diameter. The 650 carbs are about 3mm or so bigger in diameter than the 750. Right now I just have the 650 stock boots clamped down super tight, but it's causing them to wrinkle, and I'm concerned they will eventually crack due to this (not to mention I'm not even sure of the seal).
So I'm here at work trying to brainstorm different options for correcting this. So far the two most viable options I've thought up are machining an adapter ring out of aluminum, or machining it out of plastic. I don't care for the aluminum idea as it's not really something I can do, and I think it would involve permanently soldering it to the carbs (I really hate the idea of making such an unalterable mod).
Here's my thinking on the plastic idea. I can take PVC pipe and machine a couple different sizes to fit inside of eachother and then glue them. Once I've done that I can then machine the peice to the size I need inside and outside. Once done it can be tapped onto the carb intake and will hopefully stay in place and seal well.
Has anyone got a different or simpler idea?
