Stiffer clutch springs into CB360, possible?
« on: January 06, 2010, 04:58:06 PM »
Is there any way I can install stiffer clutch springs into my CB360?

Are they available aftermarket or do I have to find a bike with similar springs? If so, which can I use?

www.shspowersports.com   has the OEM honda part numbers for 360s and the earlier 350s, both show to use the same 4 clutch springs part # 22401-323-003

www.bore-tech.com shows to have what they call heavy duty clutch springs for the 350s $14.95

if you google "Todd Henning Racing" they have Barnet racing clutch parts for the 350, springs, discs, plates, clutch basket.

Pretty sure Barnnet is the racing clutch company been making clutch stuff for harleys forever. well respected clutch company.

Hi James360
The part number you list is for a CB500 Four clutch spring. Barnnet lists springs and other parts for the 350 twin but I think only plates for the 360 twin. I expect that Barnnet would know if the 350 twin and 360 twin clutch springs were the same. If I need to look at the clutch on my cb350K4 I will compare the springs with some CB550 Four clutch springs.

EBC sells stiffer clutch springs. But my experience with them is they're too strong for comfort in everyday use. An easy way to go is just install an additional 6mm washer under the head of each pressure plate bolt. That'll add preload to the springs. Don't do only half of the bolts; you don't want uneven loading on the pressure plate.

Hello tomC
I looked at the shs power sports OEM honda part numbers for a 1970 CB 350 it shows 22401-323-003 for the springs, I looked up a 1975 CB 360 same clutch spring part # 22401-323-003, honda obviously carried over the clutch springs from the earlier 350s to the 360 model. this is why i gave him the shs power sports web site so it could be looked up. I have no doubt these same 22401-323-003 clutch springs could have also been used in other models without looking them all up.
if you look at the www.shspowersports.com web site i gave saml01 you can see the 350 and 360 using the same part number spring, so any of the racing 350 clutch springs should fit, or he can take chickenman's recomendation.

Seems like in looking for parts somewhere for my 360 that someone mentioned CB550 springs are a little stiffer fit 350 honda's, but i'm not sure on this.

Hi James360
I question shs power sports listing! That is a part that was first used on a 500 Four. As the 350 Twin precedes the 500 Four if the Honda parts numbers were the same the 500 Four would use a 350 twin part number. I checked my 550 parts list and the 550 used a different part number clutch spring.
How different are these springs? I would like to know. The best way is to compare actual springs.

HI chickenman_26
Looks like Honda has decided to use the 500 Four clutch spring to replace many different part numbers.
I checked Barnett clutch's web site. They now list a spring set for the CB360. Which is the same as the spring set for the Cb350 Twin. Also the CB400 Four. The CB400 Four used CB360 Twin Clutch Spring #22401-369-000. Barnett's does not list a spring kit for the 500 Four.
Does any one know what model 275 is?

Who is this EBC company. I replaced all my clutch parts with OEM parts including the springs. Was kind of wanting some stiffer springs i'm really just using my bike as mild trail bike, hill climber. but i'm considering souping the engine up pretty good.

Who is this EBC company.
Excellent brake and clutch products. http://www.ebcbrakes.com/Index.html
Their catalog shows the clutch spring kit for your 360 as their part #CSK4. Any bike shop should be able to order for you from the catalog.

That's what I did, at crotchrocket.com, but you were faster than I was. (I wasn't trying to outdo you) I was just sitting there holding that Info, saw that YOU had already done it and thought that, maybe there was something that mine might have covered, that your's didn't. No offense intended, just hated to not do something with what I was holding, that's all. ;)

EBC sells stiffer clutch springs. But my experience with them is they're too strong for comfort in everyday use.

Thanks for the feedback. I fitted stiffer clutch springs from Bore Tech a while back on my long-term CB350K racer project. I don't know if they're EBC or not and I never measured their spring rate but I trust Bore Tech sells a quality product. I have since modified my clutch lifter assembly by retrofitting a Suzuki GT250 worm gear type mechanism. While putting it all back together I was astonished by how much effort was needed at the hand lever and I feared that my new clutch lifter was the culprit. But then I remembered the springs. Now I'm thinking about going back and fitting my original clutch springs to see if that  solves my problem. Otherwise I'm going to need some major left hand strength training!
