I swear to God!!!

my right upper (gold part) fork leg is bent the tiniest bit and it throws the bottom of the thing out by an inch.
also by looking for another upper tube I have found out my fork legs are 06-07 gsxr600.

AAAAAARGH!


I should have just saved my money and bought a straight complete assembly.

hey, just look at it as a $40 lesson you couldn't of learned ANY other way!!  and i'm sure plenty of people on here greatly appreciate the efforts you're going through for this, SO much knowledge to be spread!!  hell, i didn't even know that you could straighten fork legs effectively...

still though, sucks big time, i hope nothing else goes wrong with the build!!!

the deal with the bent forks-the upper tube is tough, but if the lower is bent too much it'll bend the upper tube as well.
apparently 1-2mm from straight is fine, but if it's hit hard enough to bend it to 4+mm your screwed.  lesson learned.

            I still need a wheel, master cyl, speedo drive, and misc doodads.

the plus side of this is, I could have found out it was bent while riding and got hurt....

also, it appears the 2008-2010 dyna narrow glide hub is +/- 5.0in  (+/-127mm) wide from flange to flange
may be more useful than shimming a 2000-2007 hub... ??? :-\ (pure speculation)

always, always. always, check used fork assemblies for runout before putting on the bike..

during the break I made
  Bump Stops

my forks were slapping the tank, SOOOOO-
I fixed it like so.

mark, drill, tap (6mm x 1.0), screw, done.



now for the other part, the tab on the frame is too high and the screws go right under it.
so...
I made a template out of hardi-board



Then I drilled some 6.5mm holes from underneath


traced my template onto a plate of 0.28in aluminum, cut it out with a hacksaw,

and filed it to the desired shape.


I clamped it to the frame tab and hit it with some spray-paint to mark out my holes

drilled and tapped them (6mm X 1.0)

and VIOLA!

That little hole was a set screw hole that I didn't notice till it was already too late. but it doesn't hurt anything.
I beat the frame tab with a hammer and filed the top and bottom so the welds and tab were straight enough for the aluminum tab to meet up flush against the frame.  

I used Allen screws (6mmX1.0X12) with a stainless lock washer and they fit in there perfect without sticking out the bottom.



    If you're doing this to your bike you'll probably want to make this part so you don't beat the crap out of your tank.

If you're doing this to your bike you'll probably want to make this part so you don't beat the crap out of your tank.

AND, you should do it before doing something that will prevent you from wanting to bung around with drilling holes in that tab... like powdercoating your frame for instance.

I did the same thing with the socket head bolts on the bottom tree; just stacked a nut under each to get them to the height of the tab.

     Tonight I measured a GSXR1000 hub, (didn't have a camera on me) and from flange to flange it measured 5 inches.

I wanted to show the new sleeve I made from the stainless shell of an old microwave.


I just cut it and formed it with pliers, files, and stuffed it into different size pipes and fittings 'till the assembly fit in tight with a little hammering.  It's round and has a flared bottom like the inside of the upper tree.

I also removed the black coating on the center hole of the upper tree using a half inch wide two sided file (the round side) that enlarged it  enough to get the cb750 stem to mate with the GSXR1000 upper tree.

    I've been toying with the idea of floating my old chopped chrome fender off the gsxr mounting tabs with some 1/4'' or thinner stainless wire.

hmm...  still in the "on paper" stage

Hey Industrial Cafe, sick build its looking really good, and this thread has been a wealth of information for me.

Was wondering if any one could me, is this Narrow Glide correct? Will it accept the gsxr cartridge bearings. I cant tell from this pic but its all the guy has posted, and he won't answer my questions

Ind Caf, hope you still got the FX 3/4 axle hub.. got a great idea wont help you but be great for someone else!

 Convert that hub to Honda 15mm ID bearings and make a center spacer. Now redrill a new 5 bolt rotor pattern on each side, same as 77/78 F 750.. now make the speedo work,, a few spacers and presto.....

 Wire wheel dual disc for F model 750s  :o

 Someone on here should consider it, cheapest way to pull it off.. I offered to build billet hubs but they would be 150-200 bux. The FX hub looks pretty good anyway..

 I thought spokes may be a problem, but they should be cheap for chrome ones, and they should fit either a 19 or 18 inch Honda rim..
