Ducati 999R. 2003 to 2007

Finally affordable to me as they are not new any more. (they were like $45,000 new)  Your riding the bike that is very very close to AMA and WSBK spec'd bikes for the street.  Full carbon fibre fairings, magnesium sub frame, magnesisum wheels, Full Ohlins suspension, lighter engine internals, bigger valves, injectors, TB, you name it.  the weight savings and extra 30HP must make a huge difference over my base 999. I hear people say that the bike almost steers itself.

Ducati Desmosedici

I would also like to ride the Ducati Desmosedici.  The only company in the world to make a REAL MotoGP Replica.  200HP 990* v-4.  Ohlins remote reservior forks, Full Cf body work, Magnesium everywhere.. The wet weather moto GP brakes.  It has it all, this is as close as you will get.  16,000 RPM for the street...$$75,000 when new, but you can find them for 40-50k used. so it
could be obtainable.  no one else makes a bike like this.

Alan,

I bought a Repsol Fireblade RR07 two years back. Up to that moment I had never driven a motorcycle newer that 1984 (CBX750). I did not know what happenend to me. Have I been sleeping all those years?

I have taken it onto the German highways (no speed limit) a number of times; power, accelaration is beyond beleve!

The long curvy roads of the German Eiffel are recommended as well.

I hope to pick a circuit day this year.

Cheers, Rene

I remember back in the 80's a frend of a friend had a Yamaha FZR400, he said it was the best handling bike he'd ever ridden bar none.  I've since read a few articles here and there saying the same thing. Finding one is damn near impossible as they've all become track bikes or been recycled.

the best handling bike bar none is a 1995 tz250 , no good for the road though
fzr 400s are still around over here but as you say most are raced , BDK get over 80 hp out of them which makes them hard to beat , the 600 crank goes straight in which makes them even quicker , there was a bloke that won the 400 tt on a 600cc 400!!
unfortunately  for him he was caught

I'm sure there are some really great ones out there, some of which I have no experience with.

But, I'm kinda prejudiced but, the 80' CBX is a blast to ride, not to mention the awesome sound that it makes. Doesn't feel like it is as big as it is AND it's funny to see some folks start counting the exhaust pipes coming out of the head and they realize that it is a 6 cylinder!  8)

I can only give you the 5 most memorable rides I have ever taken - those that I will never forget and shaped my affection for the bikes themselves.

1) Early H1 Kawasaki Mach III - 500. The howl, the noise of air intake, the rush hit at 5,500 rpm, and the tire coming off the ground whenever the first 3 happen. No sound I've ever heard comes close.

2) Mid-1970's Kawasaki KX400 motocross bike. I've never met something before with such bad manners - the motor was a beast in the dirt.

3) 2004 GSXR 1000 - I never knew such power and insane potential for speed could exist in a package so small. I could not redline the bike in any gear - the first 3 would lift the wheel instantly and the speeds in the top gears was simply too fast for me.

4) Early 70's 650 Yamaha - just does something for me that is pure, raw, and memorable. What I think motorcycling art may have been in 1971.

5) 1973 Z1 900 - the first big-block. Honda's CB750 was the first four, but the big Z1 was the most awesome bike on the planet in 1973.

ALL very impressive Gordon. 8)

First bike I rode, that REALLY impressed ME was a 62' Jawa 250 Scrambler. Back then, in the early 60's, those bikes were bike and heavy, but it had such raw power (as it seemed back then), that is was scary. Little did I know that the 2 strokes were going to REALLY get to where they were Awesomely SCARY! :)

The OTHER bike that really mad me pay attention was a 65' Royal Enfield 750 TT Interceptor. Man, I thought that was the Ultimate in POWER and SPEED! I had no idea what was in store for us in the way of 4 stroke bikes either. Of course, when I saw my 1st Super Hawk in the early 60's, I thought IT was incredible as well. AND it was just a 305cc bike! There WAS another that I almost forgot. It was a Yamaha YDS2. 2cylinder, 2 stroke, 2 carbs and awesome speed, for back then! 8) Boy, what a difference from THEN til now! Even my 73' RD350 weighs a lot less than that old YDS2 and runs better too! ;)

You just have to watch the video of this old 1971 Kawasaki 500 Mach III to understand why these things left everyone that saw, heard, or rode one with unforgettable memories. This was bad-a$$ when I was 13! And remember - this is a tiny, old-school 500cc bike. Watch the burnout at the end - not some front brake and un-weighted seat trick - this is the real thing. This will always be #1 on my list of "must rides". For me it was an orange 1972......never will forget that one.

Gordon,
Dittos on the '72 Kawasaki H1.  I bought a new one that year and the posted video brings back great memories.  I have a son-in-law who recently bought a Honda CBR600.  He let me have a crack at it.  There have been some great leaps forward since the '70s in handling.  The last time I was on something with that much kick was when I rode my a '72 H2 that my step-father bought new.  I told him about it and showed him pictures of an H1 and he gets a deer-in-the-headlights look.  I think he believes that old 2 stroke can't possibly be that fast.  I have just recently gotten back into riding and owning bikes, having gotten through the child raising years, and am surprised that these old speedsters are still around and are holding their value.  My entry back into the riding class was my recent purchase of a '77 Honda 750 F2.

the new Classic series triumphs, without a doubt. and the Sport Touring BMW twins.

Everyone should put a ride on the H1 on their "bucket list" just to be scared #$%*less and feel the rush of air under their man parts as the powerband kicks in. ;D
I would add the mighty Suzuki 750 waterbus just for it's sheer inline power, two stroke and watercooling what a mixture. :)
While we are at it add the Suzuki Titan 500, not because it was as reliable as your Granddads watch but because the "sound" from those long twin pipes, there seriously is nothing like that and never will be again it is as distinctive as any Harley sound and they wanted to brand name that!
Def the ZI Kwaka and any good size Ducati you can beg borrow or steal just to say you've actually ridden one.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
