Best:  If you got into an argument in digest mode, each response took a day, so the momentum dissipated quickly.

Worst:  Every question took a lot longer to get any answers.  Oh, and those STUPID, STUPID, STUPID wooden sidecover threads.

Yeah, Bill, and there were only a couple hundred members, so you sure didn't always get all the answers you needed.  A lot of it was trial and error and report back to the list.

Worst:  I can't really think of any, probably because I was new to the sohc4 world, and just the fact that there was an on-line community was amazing to me. :)

Yeah, wooden sidecovers indeed!

What I thought was best is the excitement of answering en be answered. Hoping to know there was somebody there who knew an answer to my question. Today it's not hoping, it's quite certain.

It was also nice that it was just a small group, kinda cozy.

Some other thing....Pleople could use their real name in stead of some alias. Made things more personal.

Cheers, Rene

Being Kaceyf2 , this was before I lost my internet connection, then couldnt remember my password and email for this site and had to create another account and start again.....I liked the old greenspun boards, even though they often used to "freeze up" and i was sad on the day we were told "you cant post there anymore, but you can still read them"  there was something oddly comforting about the colour as well, even though it was #$%*e, it was ours and was familier... and even though there waqs a real lack of amenities.....they were great, and I remember well stories of vegamite and teasing Terry because he has aboriginal roots and an alchohol problem.

Well there was Greenspun and then there was pre-Greenspun (sohc.dorje -that was simply a mail digest). I joined the latter in 1999 after I was told about it by the guy buying my CB750 F2 before I moved to Boston. I landed in Boston, bought a bike of a forum member in Maine and then met two more forum guys in NH and MA. Managed to meet more after that as well. What a great mail list it was!

Even on the old mail list (pre-Greenspun) there was the walnut sidecover thread. Bruce (hoarder of the all sidecovers helped keep that going) and Johnny from Belgium helped as well. Then there was Butch from Georgia (super-nice guy), Rene (see post above), Axl (RIP), Bud from NO, Jim in NH, Glenn (who still runs our great forum) and many more well known names that are no longer on the forum. But it was small, local and if anyone answered your question you were lucky to get 2 or 3 more replies on the matter...

Other long-continuing threads was the fig olive thread....that lasted as long as the walnut sidecover thread...

good times
Andy

Hey Andy,

While mentioning names, how is Howard in Maine doing?

He was a tremendous help to me, when I bought this k0 in Maine. It had to be shipped, he managed the logistics for me.

Regards, Rene

(PS. One of your Oxford shirts are still in-da-house)

Hey Rene,

Howard in Maine is still in Portland, ME - he sold his K6 to Ben in Portland (forum member Uncrash - really nice guy as well). As far as I know he still has his CB 400.

Very nice family photo and glad to see everyone looking well!
cheers

I came to the Greenspun days late. I remember your email address as your username. I got a lot of good info there. This is of course much better. It did take longer to get and answer. I do not remember the wooden sidecover thread. Now you have my interest, what was the wooden sidecover thing about?

Best memory was actually finding the Greenspun forum when I was fairly new to the internet and was really frustrated finding parts and information for my bike. Then there are the local friends/enthusiasts I've met because of that forum, good chance I wouldn't have met any of them otherwise. Like Andy...all I did was offer him the use of a manual I had and now I can't get rid of the guy.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

In a way that forum introduced me to the internet so it will always be strong in my mind. Can't think of a worst...unless it was those guys ridiculing my wooden side covers. I still have some around if anybody is interested, they are slicker than worm oil and don't smell nearly as bad.

It's also where I first ran into Terry...that freakin' Easy Cheese eatin' Jack Daniels inhalin' nut job from down under.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

   Ahhh...good times. Love you brothers.

It was a smaller community back then...you kinda felt like you knew everybody. But, any small town has it's limitations so the bigger town that we've become is a better place as far as information/input goes. Yeah, you don't know everybody...you don't like some people...but all in all it's a better experience.

What's that you say? He doesn't like some people? Well, yeah...that's right. So watch out...it might be you.  ;D ;D ;D Don't make me ignore you.  :P

Back on the old mailing list days, (I guess that was pre Greenspun -- I don't even remember Greenspun, as I basically signed off in 1998 when I bought my Yamaha XJ600S.  I put my 550 in the garage for the "cafe treatment" where she basically languished until 2006) there was a thread that all started because good used side covers were so expensive, and there were no good aftermarket sidecovers (still aren't for 77-78 CB550s).

There was somebody who had a mythical warehouse full of left sidecovers and almost every other post there was a threat about how someone was going to steal your sidecover.  Theories about alternative sources of sidecovers began, including manufacturing them out of walnut.

fascinating.

I first jumped in here in 2004 and if I remember correctly.....it was in between the Greenspun era and what it is today. I remember having a member number and then it changed in like 2005.
I was a late bloomer to the computer and never had one or did much on one till 11-02. I got my compaq and I think Windows XP was fairly new then. It still took me a move from Wyoming to California in 2004 to find this site.I had the pleasure to meet Glen,Sean,Jeff,Lloyd, and quite a few other members back in summer 06'.
I don't regret joining this club and like it when strangers engage me in conversation about my bike and the patch I wear on my ball cap!!!!

A little history.  First came the mailing list, which started in 1994 and lasted until 2009 when I told Alan Fleming that we may as well pull the plug on it since there hadn't been a message posted in years.  A few years after the mailing list started, I began experimenting with a forum that went through a few iterations the last of which used software from a guy name Phil Greenspun, a professor at MIT who started photo.net among other things.  Those forums ran on my work computer and when my boss informed me that my computer was running the third busiest website in the organization, I started looking for someplace to host the forums and came across the Greenspun forums.  After Phil Greenspun shut his forums down, the forums ran for a year or so another forum software and a brief stint as a yahoo group before I started using the software we use now.

Some folks have been with us from the beginning and some never really made the transition from the mailing list, though I still see some of the folks from the mailing list checking in here from time to time.  I've met some great folks through this group and its been great to hear from Rene and Johnny these past few weeks.  Next week, I'm going to the DC Motorcycle show with Bruce 'Mr Side Cover' Giller and might get lucky and see Marion again, another early member, who appears at the DC show every couple of years.  One great thing about this group is that people stay connected one way or another - I even got a linked-in invite last week from Mr SOHC/4 himself, John Soliday.  I wonder what's become of Don Laubach?

Hi Glenn,

Please give my best to Marion if you see him in DC. I bought his K4 back in 2003 I think. Really nice guy. Same goes for Bruce - I was blocking on his last name.

And as always thanks to you for making it all go so smoothly!

Best wishes
Andy

I should add that the thing that brought Don Laubach to mind today was a box I found when I was cleaning out my shop.  It had never been opened since Don mailed it to me maybe 8 years ago.  I opened the box to find two nice CB550F side covers!
