CB400F exhaust on CB550F?
« on: January 07, 2010, 07:55:28 AM »
Hi!

My original exhaust needs restauration but I'm still deciding if it's worth the pain.

I like the shape of the header of the original and all aftermarket exhaust that I've seen so far, have straight pipes.

Would it be possible to fit a CB400 exhaust to the 550F?
It would think that the headers would not fit and that the pipes would be too restrictive but I think it would look quite nice :)

Anyone done that?

I don't think it would work, I once tried fitting an aftermarket 550 header to a 400 and it was miles different, can't remember the details exactly but I think the exhaust ports are all spaced too far apart on the 550.

Also, and unfortunately for us 400/4 owners, the headers are fairly restrictive.  If you feel like spending $1000, there's a guy who mocked up a more open stainless exhaust for a 400/4, and I'd bet he could make some to fit the 550:  http://www.roccitycafe.com/item.php?path=store/u400ex,

Yes! This header comes quite near the original 400F and 550F ones.

But $1000... *sigh*

Hey, Check out this guy's cb550 pipes--you may want to inquire about where he got them, as they also look pretty close to the cb400f:  http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=3995.0

That looks like a stock 550F header that he just wrapped and replaced the muff(hehe).  Those Roc pipes are gorgeous but I think Benji does just as nice work for less, and they come polished too.

Somebody told me, that it would be possible to solder close all orifices and after chroming to drill them open again. This way the chrome bath will not get contaminated. The pipes have to be filled with sand, so that they don't float in the bath... He said that it was quite a pain to get all the sand out of it afterwards :)

Maybe I will go this way, depending on the costs for welding/soldering and chroming. Until then, a Motad exhaust will have to do...
