Compression test results, any nice suggestions..??
« on: January 03, 2006, 01:34:56 AM »
Hello to all SOHC'ers

I pulled my motor today - yuk...another blast from the past... I just remebered why I have been holding off doing this...

Anyway I won't bore you with repetitve stuff I hope... not too much anyway..

1. Oil drained from oil tank - drained out about half a cup only (I think problem number 1) - son number 2 (definitely problem number 2) dropped drain plug down funnell into very large half full 20 litre drum of really cruddy oil from truck/and two cars recently serviced.
drum previously used to store molasses... I mentioned to him you dropped it you get it out... simple says he...bolts upright knocks over 20 litre drum, many swear words from me.... eventually get enough ice cream tubs to get plug out of upside down drum, it was pretty gooey...
2. disconnect all electrics etc, and cables, diconnect oil hoses - a few drops from these.
3. take off sump plug - nearly dislocate shoulder, I thought it was welded on - out comes at least three litres of oil (I think too much oil in there)
4. take off oil filter using the other shoulder, with ratchet & 1 metre pipe extension for extra leverage, nearly tipped the bike over.
will not use either shoulder for beer lifting for a while now...(problem number three)
5. rang for reinforcements....
6. oil filter was really filthy - i could scrape the crud off - disposed of thoughtfully.
7.took off all remaining mounting bolts and hefted this motor onto the work trolley.

Compression figures - dead cold motor - no exhaust, no carbs, hand held compression tester on each cylinder as follows: test results done twice
DRY TEST
#1 - 100,100
#2 - 125,130
#3 - 150,150
#4 - 130,130
WET TEST - also repeated twice - first time with a bit of wd40 down the plug hole, second time about a teaspoon of oil.
#1 - 120/120
#2 - 130/130
#3 - 150/150
#4 - 130/130

Sorry no photos, missus took camera with her on holidays..(problem number 4 - no camera)
too embarassed to post them anyway... its pretty ugly down there..

Please guide me to the light guys, let me hear your pearls of wisdom....what now.. apart from the massive external engine clean, frame clean etc etc...

thanks all

G'Day Mate, well if you can't pick up your beer with either arm, then send it to me for safe-keeping, ha ha! Magnetic pickup tools are good for retrieving sump plugs, looks like you might need rings, as any more than 10% difference is pretty much a rings and hone job in my most humble opinion. (you've checked your valve clearances, yeah?)

Actually, your real problem is that you've got TOO MUCH compression in #3, so why not just poke some stainless steel filings or some sand down that spark plug hole to even things up? Finally, do you really know where your missus went? Is she coming back? Did you "snuff" her and bury her (and that camera) under your shed when she saw how much money you were spending on bikes? Where do people in Queensland go for holidays anyway? S'alright mate, i won't tell anyone, if you send me that beer............. Cheers, Terry.  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Terry,
I'm in Sydney... no haven't snuffed her, have never been able to hide money from her (she's currently in europe spending it). Yeah I don't like the compression results, but I won't be putting the sand or filings down #3 either.

Magnetic tools are fine, but son # 2 was asked to get it out..

Valve clearances checked and all within specs...

and i'm not sending you my beer, straws are also useful....shed does exist but is full of you know... crap..
my workshop is back of my warehouse, sometimes I get to tinker.

thanks
