Been a long time comin!
« on: January 07, 2010, 09:48:20 PM »
Finally might have time to pick up that old guitar again! Got some new strings. Set my action and tuned it and finally set my intonation!
Just gotta plug it in tomorrow and set my pickup height. I still want a trembucker for the bridge pickup.
Been so long I am virtually starting all over again.

good to hear! i'm in the process of moving from an apartment to my friends farmhouse. i'm excited to dust off my electric guitar and crankup the volume. its been neglected since the last time my apartment neighbor complained about the noise... apparently he doesn't appreciate classic rock n roll played through a Fender at 50 watts of tube power. having a marshall half stack in an apartment is like owning a SOHC4 in Alaska.

Yes it is! My little practice amp is only 12 watts and but as  i have told people before, 12 watts on a guitar amp is nothing like 12 watts from a stereo. That amp can practically fill the house! I hate to imagine what 50 would do! ;D

hey Inigo Montoya what type/brand of guitar do you have?

yeah i bought a 5 watt tube amp thinking i would be quiet enough for apartment use. not quite, at 3/4 volume its about as loud as a trumpet. also tried headphones but theres just so substitute when playing those loud Zeppelin riffs!

I got my stuff years ago in high school. Practiced quite a bit for a while but have not been able to pretty much at all in the last 8.
I got myself Peavey Rage 108. For a small amp it works pretty well and is very solid. I can STAND on the thing. It also has awesome distortion built into it, I can got from virtually no distortion to so dirty it makes grunge look clean!
The guitar is a Charvette by jackson/charvel. I know it is a "cheap" guitar but it is very solidly built and has a decent sustain. 3 pickups, a hummer and 2 singles. Only thing I am not crazy about is the non-locking tremolo. Heavy as all hell though. I had to get a padded strap for the thing as a regular would dig in so bad. Other people seem to like these guitars though. Found some reviews for them and they average about a 7.5 with almost all people so that is not bad. When I got about $500 to blow, I might get a es 335 though.

do those Charvettes' have the floyd rose type of tremolo? i think they do. my ibanez rg has the same type of trem but it was a locking. my locking tremolo was a pain in the arse because the dang thing kept going out of tune anyway. i endend up opening the back plate and blocking the trem with a piece of wood. then it worked great... except no whammy bar. those es335 are great guitars. i've never played a Gibson 335 but the Epi dots are awesome for the price. my friend bought one last month at GC for $250. now i'm wishing i would have bought one for that price :-\

Some of the charvs do but mine has a standard trem on it. I had to replace the nut as the strings were binding and and the strings would ping when I used it. There were a lot of different charvettes made. Most had 2 pickups, I got a 3 but only 22 fret.

Your buddy must have gotten that sucker on a good sale! Most 335s I see start at 400. I want this style though http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ETCACHCH/
Maybe not that exact color. It is the bridge style I like.

That is the one I have been looking at for the most part. I need to find a place here that sells the semi hollow bodies and try them out.

i play/practice at least 2 hours every day. getting back into playing the guitar has been great for my mental state, it's really helped to curb the depression i was experiencing from the chronic pain i deal with on a daily basis. i'm ever getting my "ear" back (i can listen to a song a few times then play a passable version. i'm working on a few John Prine songs today.
