Help with motor bolt! ** 75 CB550F **

Hi all, I can not get the bolt circled in yellow to come out, its the only thing keeping me from getting out the motor. That dang bolt moves freely, I tried using a sledge hammer but it did not budge. I also tried heat no luck. All the time hitting it with WD-40 cause thats all I have atm.. I did notice that the spacer moves with the bolt and I tried to hold on to the spacer with a pair of pliers and I was unable to keep it from turning. So is that collar threaded or is it just rusted..?

no, the bolt is only threaded on the end, have you tried to rotate it with a wrench while hitting it? that might get it to break it loose.

Yea, it spins freely, so I have to think it is the spacer there.. Dang it. I am guessing its just rusted to the bolt.. I will keep shooting WD40 in it until next weekend and see if it free's up.. errr...

Use a brass drift on the threaded end and knock it out

Don't have one.. Might be able to find one at the hardware store, in the mean time, I put the bolt on flush with the end and hit HARD several times with a 10lb mallet and it did not budge.. The brass drift is a good idea, I wont feel so bad hitting so many times with that.

The ATF Acetone mix is 50/50 good luck looks like a #$%*.

Thanks BobbyR I will give it a try tomorrow night after work.. And you are correct its going to be a #$%*.. its the last damn bolt also.. I am sure Murphy's law is at work here..

Have you got the motor supported underneath? that could be one reason the bolt is stuck - it may be taking the full weight of the motor.

Get a jack underneath it and take of the pressure of the motor in the frame - then give it a whack..

You may have a point, currently its on its side because I figured all the other bolts came out so easy I had nothing to worry about. I will have to try a few things. The front end is off and the rear tire is off also so getting a jack under it atm is not going to work. I may have to put every thing back on it to do that.

Mine was stuck too but not that bad. I always have good luck with PB Blaster to loosen up rusty bolts. Soak it good, give it few light taps Both ways (to the left and to the right) , soak it again and let it sit overnight. Don't hit the threads too hard, if you peen it over it will be even harder to get out. leave the nut threaded on a few turns and whack the nut. I don't believe WD40 is meant for loosening rusty stuff.

do you have a way to harness the engine with straps? eyebolts in the joists or a beam between two ladders?

If you have it on it's side, the weight of the engine isn't holding it in there. Just keep after it, heat might help loosen things. I've seeen people break things getting excited with the hammers. Just don't despair, it will give up sooner or later.

Well its still stuck, I could not find any PB Blaster any place around here. I have seen on the forums where that worked for things like this. I lifted the motor off its side so I could get a better hit on the end of the bolt and the motor is sitting on the floor and the frame moves freely so I don't think its the frame keeping it from sliding out. I also took a vice grip and clamped it onto the spacer and turned the bolt and I could not get the space to move freely, it seems to be rusted to the bolt. I will try the 50/50 transmission/acetone mix and see if that works. Tomorrow I will hit some places by work and see if I can find some PB Blaster..

Thanks for all the input.. keep em coming, one of them has to work.

Ok I will give it a good soak tonight and try and get it out tomorrow after work.. I will then see where I am. I tried to heat it up however with the wires in the way I was afraid to get it too hot.. So it got really hot to the touch but did not seem to help much.. sigh..

Figures the one blt left to get the motor out.. err.. ;)

Errrrgh.. Still stuck.. Been soaking it with the 50/50 mix.. I am going to try and find some PB Blaster and they also make something just for freeing up frozen parts so I am going to try that as well..

Forget the PB if you're using the 50-50 ATF/acetone mix, it's superior to PB.

I was wondering if it might be beneficial to drill through the spacer (but not through the bolt) and get some acetone/atf mixture down inside to work it's wonderful magic?

As a last resort, you could slice the spacer lengthwise with a dremel and then spread it with a screwdriver, that'll free it up.

I would bet the ranch that your problem is entirely in that spacer!

You've tried soaking it and that didn't work.
Get or borrow a gas torch and heat that spacer up.
Just heat it up paralell to the shaft on one side, rotate and heat up the other side.
You shouldn't have to get it cherry red.
When both sides of the spacer are hot drive out that shaft with a brass drift.
Good luck finding a drift that diameter. And it will probably only be 9" long.
Be prepared and have a long carriage bolt redy to push that brass drift all the way through.

Be forwarned that you will prbably bugger the threads on the shaft and you are not doing the spacer any favors either. It's only a spacer so no threat!
