« on: January 03, 2006, 06:53:17 AM »
I would like to know where to go to get paint for my 1975 Honda CB550 Four that I am restoring.  Does anyone know where I could purchase one of these colors?

Flake Sunrise Orange or Candy Orange

Thanks for your help!!!

You could try DonDirtBiker as he sell kits that are quite highly spoken of. He's on this site so run a member search to get his email/PM.

Check the paint FAQ's.  There's a recipe for "Flake Sunrise Orange" in there.
Actually runs --> 1975 CB550-K1

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Flake Sunrise Orange from Don. It should be here soon. It's going on a K5/K3 frankenbike.

Hey 6pkrunner,
It would be great if you could please keep us posted on how it goes for you and what process you used.

I've been thinking hard about Don's paints. The price is certainly resonable in my oppinion. I'm not skilled like a Jedi when it comes to painting with anything other than a can, so I don't know if I should tackle putting on Don's paint or not. I've been playing around with some "can" based ideas though and like the results I'm getting if I go this route I'll post my results.

Hey Bits- nice to see you over here.  I knew about that paint recipe, but thought it would be more fun if you found it.  Let us see pix when you do it.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Disco - I had started a thread just on the very topic, but for Candy Gold. I tried to get Don to send a kit across the border but he said it was a real headache. So I went to a local custom paint shop and they told me they could match Candy Gold no problem. I brought them a sidecase and they scanned it 3 or 4 times. It gave a formula, but said it had to be "adjusted" to be a perfect match. They sent the results off to the main plant who again said no problem. Took about a week for the paint to arrive and it looked like candy mustard in the can. No sweat I was again told. Anyway I got my painter to apply it and it did turn out like Candy Gold - if it was blinding sunlight 24 hours a day. The lightest hue was a dead perfect match, but when any shadow hit it, it still stood brilliant.
So I went through about three or four people and laid an underground railroad, much like Harriet Tubman, to get Don's kits to arrive here.
I have both Candy Gold and Flake Sunrise Orange en route. I fully intend to post the results when they are made known. So far the paint is still in the US. I'm waiting for one guy, who is on vacation, to bring it across. Then only one last 1500 mile trip and its here!
The paint is holding up the K2 project, and I just got a good (supposedly) set of sidecases for the K5/K3 off of eBay this week so the Sunrise Orange can be sprayed when the cases arrive.
Pictures will be posted - unless they are a complete disaster like the last batch. >:( ;D

6pkrunner,
Oh yeah, I remember reading that thread. Sorry that it didn't work out for you. You can't imagine some of the images I'm dreaming up about your "Underground Railroad". Please do post the results.

-well while not being completely illegal, I don't want to expose any names so they may face incrimin.......oh Hell the effort to get paint across is next to criminal anyway. I'm sure weapons grade plutonium is easier to get across borders. ;D
I'll have to email buddy to see if he did get back from stateside yet. He could be rotting in a jail cell.
