CB500 & CB550 Cam Shaft Removal

Hi Guys,

I wanted to give a quick How-to  on removing the Cam Shaft and Sprocket from a CB500/550
I ran into a problem while attempting to pull the shaft, and searching did not net me any answers.
I posted in the main forum, and Les Ross (aka Lester Piglet) gave me the answer immediately.
So here are some pictures and a brief explanation of how to get the job done.

So, here we are with our camshaft, Sprocket and Timing Chain.  Note here that I have removed the 2 7mm Knock Bolts which secure the sprocket to the Cam Shaft.  I also made sure that the Tensioner Adjustment was all the way clockwise, the loosest it can get.


 


At this point, I could not achieve enough clearance to slip the timing chain from the sprocket, nor could I clear the cam shaft from the Head.  No matter how I moved the pieces around, it was not enough to allow the cam chain to come off the Sprocket – which is the key to getting it all apart.

In came Lester Piglet  with the tip to take a screwdriver, or anything long enough and insert it down the back of the Cam Chain Tunnel in order to put pressure on the tensioner.  This frees up more slack, and I was easily able to remove the Chain from the Sprocket, and everything came out.
Here is the driver down the back of the Chain Tunnel.



Notice – I took the picture after freeing up the Cam Chain….

Anyway, I hope this helps someone!  Gotta’ love this site and its contributors!

I followed the above to a "T" but needed a bit of help...

I had to "PUSH and Turn" the adjuster bolt counter clockwise as far as it will go and tighten the jam nut in that position to get the tensioner to back all the way off for maximum slack. If you just loosen them jam nut, the tensioner will keep pushing on the chain.

This above help from a member was just enough to do the trick!

I was doing this job last night also and was having the same problem. The manual tells you to loosen the cam chain tensioner retainer bolt however this puts more pressure on the chain as it also the way you adjust it.. I was thinking I would need to do something similar to the answers provided here. It took 3 clicks for confirmation. This site is a perpetual gold mine. Cheers.

Also another thing to mention that is not immediately apparent or described in the manual is that the cam chain need to be removed and installed from the right hand side over the cam sproket mount. Attempting to fit from the left does not leave enough space and the chain fouls the tunnel and does not have enough slack to fit. Goes easily from the right.
