donor engine
« on: January 13, 2010, 06:46:51 PM »
i started to strip down the 74 cb550 to swap over to my 78 frame and looked inside the intake and exhaust and definately need to clean the head up lots of carbon in the intake and exhaust ports what can i spray in there to soak and clean those ports  up without taking the head off yet to clean them up. i ran dry compression test and got 100-120 psi  by kicking it over is this descent for now until i fire it up  as i don't know  how long  it sat at the salvage yard i don't want to tear into the top end until i have a chance to run it and assess the problems or leaks that may exist.i suspect that the numbers may be off as i have not set valves or done any of the regular maint that should be done to ensure accurate readings

Well, you don't want to destroy the O-rings and rubber seals inside there, so brake cleaner is out.  You could try SeaFoam, ATF or similar.

Or you could wait until you have it running an spray a wee bit of water into the intakes to steam clean the innards.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Throw some sea foam in it when it's runing, it will smell like it's burning coal.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
