Topic: Props for the Metal Roofing

We recently had our roof replaced due to age and some unfortunate hail storms here over the last couple years.  My wife and I had quite a bit of discussion on the type of roof we placed on the house.  Comparing the benefits of cost vs style.  In the end we ended up getting both (in my opinion). 

To anyone who's looking for a new roof and doesn't want to worry about it for their lifetime, don't forget to check out the metal roofing options out there.

Final cost was appx. Twice the cost of normal asphalt shingles, but was well worth it in my opinion.  I can forward the Company and cost details to anyone who's interested.... Just send me a PM.  If you're in the US, it qualifies for the ENERGY CREDIT deduction on your taxes ($1500 Saved!).

Threw in a couple pics of our unusual chimney.... had to have the top rebuilt this year, but the stained glass shines right through to the front room.

Gonna do the exterior myself in the next few years... gotta save up the money for insulation and fiber cement siding

I imagine the amount of overhanging trees dropping stuff on the roof was a major reason for your choice.

Haven't put any water collection in yet..... Our old house had a nice system rigged up for water collection for the gardens. Looking into placing some rain barrels but haven't been planning too much till spring gets closer.  We're in pretty tight quarters with the neighbours, so i'd like to keep everything fairly streamline.

Hey Motley,

I'm afraid that I don't know much about the chimney.... I do know that the three chimney masonry guys that came to look at it for mortar repair hadn't seen one like it.

The story goes that a home builder wanted to build houses for 3 of his daughters.  All three houses are next to each other with ours in the middle.  Rough build times are; 1925 for our house, 1926 for the house to the right (when facing the front), and 1928 for the house to the left.  An old lady from down the street told us that story.  Also an old furnace repair guy told my neighbours the same thing a few years before we bought the house.

All three houses have nearly identical floor plans and two have the stained glass.  Our is the only one in the chimney though.  I have the original title history of the house that shows all previous owners and land deeds back to the late 1800's.  

We have only found 1 other house in the city that has a similar chimney design and appears to be built around the same time.
 
One of these days, I'll have to try and find out more about the builder.

in another 15 years or so (when the warranty on the roof i have now is up) i'd like to do metal roofing. everything i've read about it has been good.

Metal is what we have. The reason. My Grandmother's house has metal shingles, only way I know to describe it.
They have been on the house since it was built in the 1920's. I figured if they last that long I won't ever have to
worry about roofing my house again. So I used metal.

The powder coated standing seam metal roofs will last most of this century, longer if you clean, etch and repaint in about 50 years. 

I love to put them on, but most customers do not want to bear the cost.


I put on a 40 year shingle as my homeowners association will not allow all metal roofs. I'll be 96, maybe.

Yeah, we chose metal mainly because I'm to old to get up on roof and re-shingle anymore and by the time this needs replacing I'll be long dead. It was about 1/2 again as expensive as good shingles

Thanks... It's always been on my list of things to do. Just never seem to get around to it.  One of these days.

My parents did copper roofing, seems to hold up pretty well and looks nice.
