Help! Dyna-S installation--wrong rotor sent with the kit?
« on: January 14, 2010, 08:20:46 PM »
Argh!  Can you all tell me if I'm an idiot, or if I got an incorrect part sent to me?  I ordered a dynatek DS1-1 ignition for my '77 cb400f.  The box says honda 350/400 four.  But the part that I think they refer to as the  "dyna s rotor" does not fit over the advance assembly shaft (after removing the original points cam) as they say it should.  Nor does it have the "1/4 inch magnet" attached to it that the instructions refer to.  Is it possible I have the wrong kit, or "rotor"?  Has anyone had this experience?  Thanks in advance for helping me figure this one out!

you need to pull the points cam off of the advancer. it's like a sleeve on the shaft where the rotor goes.

remove the 10mm nut off the shaft, remove the spark advancer. pull the points cam off of the advancer and you will see a pin, you must remove the pin. then put the advancer back in, and put the new rotor over the advancer shaft.

I don't think there's any such pin on the 400 model--the instructions say there's one on some 550s and 750s, though.  See the pics below.  The first pic shows the advance unit removed (in the middle), with the old points cam on the right (removed), and the new rotor on the left.   The second picture shows me trying to slide the rotor over the shaft.  doesn't fit--the ID of the new rotor is less than that of the old points cam by a few mm at least.  Am I missing something???

ah ok, now that we have all the info, yes it IS likely the wrong unit. give the people at Dynal a call tomorrow. theyre great to deal with. i had a trigger unit go bad on the igntion in my k4 750 and it was past time on the warrantee but they still replaced the entire plate and triggers without a question.

Cool thanks.  I compared the ID of the two parts and they're off by 1/16".  I bought the kit from an e-tailer, and have sent him a message.  He was super cool to work with previously, so hopefully this will be a cinch.   Thanks for the feedback!

Problem solved!  I called Dynatek and they knew exactly what the problem was right away, said the later model 400/4's had a wider shaft, took my address and sent the right rotor same day free of charge.  Apparently there was a note in the box that addresses this issue that I didn't see.  Wow, excellent customer service!  So I have an extra rotor that would fit an earlier model cb400f or 350f if anyone wants or needs it...  it might make a good paperweight!

I've been impressed with Dyna service as well.
Always willing to try to help and knowledgeable staff every time.
Not that I've had many issues, but still.
I think I had to call them twice for some reason or another.
