Topic: About welding aluminum

While cleaning 20 years of grit and grime off the oil pan I noticed this crack. Is this reasonably fixable. Also can the outside be built up so it can be filed and polished back. I know it can be done on steel but what about Aluminum

Mate it's quite fixable.
Aluminium can be welded.
Is that a rocker cover off a 750?
It's a bit hard to tell from the pics but that's what I'm guessing.
If it is, then it is probably worth considering getting a second hand cover and using it rather than spending the time and money repairing the one you have.

No..its the oil pan/sump errrr don't know what else to call it. Goes on the bottom of the engine

To fix the cracks and prevent leaks you would use the aluminum welding inside the sump. For cosmetics you you could us e the rods or JB Weld and paint on the outside. You can get the rods at Home Depot. You will need something hotter than a propane torch.

Mapp is what you would use. You can get the rods ar Home Depot or Lowes. Bernz o Matic packages them.

X2!  To me mig or tig welding any part that has been soaked in oil is a PIA because it is hard to get the oil out of all the nooks and crannys.  I'll have to break something so I can give this stuff a try.

Those alumiweld rods are great for light or cosmetic repairs,
but don't use them on any stressed parts. It's just not made
for that.
FYI - they are great to "fill and drill" stripped out bolt holes.
I've done that and it works great!

What part of the world are you in and what bike? It doesn't look like a 750, if it was, I'd give you a good sump. There might be a member nearby who could help. I'm taking my tig to Davenport Ia. to weld on a funny car for a friend tomorrow.
