Going to England
« on: January 16, 2010, 08:12:52 AM »
I'll be travelling to England in the beginning of March. My wife is going to speak at Oxford University. We will be staying in London for a few days and then several days near Oxford. Couple of questions for our English friends and anyone who has travelled there before. I was looking to see what the riding possiblities are over there.I have always wanted to go riding there. I plan on going to the Ace Cafe for sure.

What can I expect weather wise? Will it be too cold, wet, etc.??

Can I rent a motorcycle? Is so how much $ for a VFR, Speed Triple, etc for about a week?

Who do you recommend??

Anyone over there want to loan me one? ( I thought I would throw that in here)

Is there anything I have to do license wise, insurance wise, etc.?? I have an international drivers license but I think it only covers autos. What else might I need?

I'm not really into the motorcycle tour thing, I like to do my own routes, times, speeds, etc.

Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

You will have a great trip! Oxford is a great place to visit - but pretty bad to drive around. I lived there for 4 years and had a CB750F2 while there. Getting out of Oxford though and the Cotswolds beckon with their narrow stone-walled roads, quaint thatch-covered English villages, and hilly, twisty terrain is a must on a bike! I had some great times there. Dont miss the White Horse south of Abingdon -nice ride and also there is a great roadside biker cafe hangout (a real one!) on the road between Oxford and Reading where on weekends you can get your ham sandwhich, coffee and hang out with 100+ other bikes who have dropped in to warm up. In fact riding anywhere around Oxford is good!!!

Dont miss The Trout pub -on the edge of Oxford - its an old stone pub by the river with a picture-esque stone bridge over the river and some good walking on the other side of the pub. There is a Honda dealer in Oxford (a few dealers in fact) - google them and write asking about rentals. That would be your best bet.

Dont miss the ride out to Woodstock and Blenheim palace - both at the edge of the best riding - the Cotswolds ;-). Further afield you can head for South Wales and have even more fun there.

Weather in March is variable - can be cool (36 -45F) -bright, sunny to rainy. Oxford is usually fairly dry though.

Oxford sites not to miss - Christchurch college - walk down to the river from here and back up to Magdalen College/botanical gardens....from here walk along the back alleyway to the Bridge of Signs and you`ll be in front of the Matriculation Hall...take a left and you`ll see Radcliffe camera and the Reading room of the Bodlien library which is on your right...also here is Brasenose College and All Souls college.

Note -at the Bride of Sighs you will see a tiny alleyway...go down here and you will find The Turf pub...great place for a beer...watch out for low ceilings ;-).

London - riding here is also good fun but you`ll need to be careful of everyone else - its legal to split lanes and everyone does it. Watch out on roundabouts.

Anything specific let me know.

** if you want to meet some original "cafe racers" go and see Dave Clark at http://www.daveclarkemotorcycles.co.uk/. Check out the gallery on the website....Old school backstreet place. The father who still works there knows everything about bikes - real character. He may remember the tall Scottish guy with the 1974 orange Honda CB750 - he took a hammer to my steering-head bearings - this was back in 2003/2003.

cheers
Andy

An Ace Cafe meet is a good idea.

PM details of your trip (when you have them) and we'll sort something out.

Last time we did this it was with CrazyPJ  ;D

Thanks all for the advise. I don't mind riding in the cold. I ride all year long (everyone thinks I'm crazy riding below freezing, but I grew up on snowmobiles..). Rain and snow is another thing. Andy 750, thanks for the advise on places to go, I am printing this and plan on seeing those sights. SteveD, I would definetely be up for meet. Looks like we will be in London from the 3rd to the 5th of March, then about 5 days in Oxford, then back to London on the 12th, flying out the 13th.

My plan is to watch the weather, if it looks good for a couple days I will try to rent a bike for about two days and do some riding....alot of riding... It has always been a dream of mine to ride the English country side and small towns there.I don't know if the wife wuld be up for it. I wish this were happening in June....I would love to hit the Isle of Mann. Last time I was on the Island for a lengthy stay was back in '91 but spent all my time in Scottland hanging out with the Royal Marines up there.

I will start looking for places to rent bikes over there. If needed I will pack all my cold/wet weather riding gear. I will let you know how things progress and if anyone wants to get up for a ride with a Yank while I'm there, let me know.

Thanks,

I visited London a few years ago.  I had a blast!   I spent a whole day at the British Museum. Toured the Tower of London, visited Trafalgar Square, British War Museum, Westminster, St. Paul's, etc. Did the whole tourist thing.
I had a tube pass that was good for unlimited travel during my stay. It made getting around London a breeze.
I took the train down to Portsmouth for the day and saw Nelson's ship, the HMS Victory.
I wanna go back! :)

I just looked up Raceway Rentals in London. Looks like most bikes are 70-85 pounds per day. Anyone have any experience with them?? I would probably go with something like the VFR.
