"Little Horse," and "Little Dragon" the war of the 500's
« on: January 17, 2010, 07:37:08 pm »
Hi,

This is my first post here, so I would just like to say hello and share with you all my current project. It is a cb500, I have had it since August. My goal with it was to build a truly budget build I expect by the time it is ridealble to have only spent $1100 this includes the price to buy the bike back in august. Actually I am almost done too. Final touches and all happening now. I was inspired to go for it by one of benji's bikes. Anyways here are a few pics. I will post up more pics a little later.

Here is what I started with, I picked up the bike in my VW bus, it was small enough to fit.

This is the last shot I have of the majority of the bike put together. It is all in parts now and next week I wil begin assembling it all back together.

For a more detailed build chronicle I have been keeping a history at http://superhawkforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19859

Thanks for looking

Wow, it’s amazing to see you take your ideas and sculpt them into something as awesome as you have.  It’s going to be one killer bike when completed.

I too would like to shamelessly gank this idea if you'd like to expand on it. Been looking at some bicycle speedo's with magnetic pickups but they're all battery driven and figuring out how to reset the trip odometer and get to the other features while keeping the thing watertight is an interesting (to me) condition.

Did you just extend the bottom of the speedo case out of the tach housing? I was looking at speedos with buttons on the top so was considering some kind of lever action. Any more to tell on your rig there would be, well, awesome  ;D

Well here is a little run down on the gauge. I bought a cheap 2 button bike speedo off of ebay. I got the idea since alot of guys run them on their superhawks (i have one too) because of the nasty error, its like a cheap speedo healer, so since I knew it would work I bought it. Then I tore it apart, the screen, the computer, the buttons, everything. I cut the bottom part off of the speedo to retain the buttons then grafted all the parts to the plexiglass face I made earlier. I printed off a new face I designed in solid works. Adhered it completing the face. Then it was a matter of making it fit in the old housing, this required removing the inner white reflector and glass. I cut a whole, rectangularish in both pieces. Then I made an aluminum relief to house the button assembly out side of the bezel. Epoxied that together, epoxied the buttons together and silicone sealed the top part so I can replace the battery later if needed. So, was it easy? No, was it worth it, I think so.

Indeed tempting, I probably would burn the midnight oil, but still no tires... so probably not. Next year I could easily enter it. Damn if I had known a month ago I could have stepped it up and made it. Looking forward to checkin your bike out.
