I could use a little help... I can get the bike started but it won't stay running. I can start with choke and some throttle it will run for a second or two then die. I previously had the bike running for a few minutes prior to taking everything apart for the build. That was after I had cleaned the carbs. Now I didn't touch the carbs since and cannot get it to idle. Any ideas. All four carbs are getting gas. I haven't checked the points, but like I said before it ran well before I tore down for paint. Number 4 cylinder sometimes after it dies blows a little bit of smoke back out through the intake. Frustrating, help would be appreciated, thanks.

Found the probelm, the carbs even though I cleaned them had gunked up again. A quick clean and some really fresh gas she started right up. A few little things will need to be addressed, like larger pilot jets, but she stays running now!

It sounds nice!  Great job on the pipe.  Glad to hear it was an easy fix.  Get that tank back and post some final pics!  I'm dying to see it all buttoned up.

God that's hot.
My minute, almost worthless suggestion is to use just a little bit of seafoam in your gas.  It seems to keep the residue down (or whatever it is in gas now that keeps gunking up carbs) and as an added bonus in rainy oregon, helps keep water out of your fuel.

Thanks everyone all good tips, I haven't sync the carbs yet, it runs well now on clean gas though. I am going to finish my plug wire swap project, get a gallon of premium and yell at the shop about still not having my tire...ok I may not yell but at least call them. Then there will be hi-res pics and a better quality video.

so I have been working through a couple issues, I have oil leaking from few places. the head gasket on the drivers side, only after stopped a drip or two thats it, the oil filter cover gasket (I was planning on changing that and the filter again soon anyways). I also had a leak from the valve cover end the tiny one but I fixed that already. Head gasket cost $75 I will have to save a little bit of money for that, not a big deal, it will take me an afternoon or so to replace. I got a chance to ride it a mile or so today, it feels great motor runs strong sounds mean. The rear shock seems really stiff. I can't wait for some dry pavement for a real ride!

So I could use some second opinions. I rode the bike today and the front end had a bad vibration at about 50 mph. I thought maybe the forks where to stiff on the dampening and where not releasing correctly. But when I was looking things over I noticed that the front wheel and the rear wheel have no weights . Ever have any wheels not need balance weights, I never have? Should I return to the shop and ask them what the hell?

Years ago I had a shop replace a tire for me after paying and on my way out he said, you should get that balanced.  WTF!!!

I assumed it went without saying, I was wrong>>>>> >:(  It was already back on the bike!

I found another motorcycle shop later and went in with just the wheel to have it done.

I said to them mount and balance... they charged me for it. What is the deal with shops these days?

When i was working in a bike shop downunder we weren't allowed to fit a tyre without balancing for safety reasons. I would go back and have them balance it for nothing, thats just crazy.... ::)

It's not just shops.  It seems very hard to find people, in general, that are good at what they do nowadays.  That's why I like this forum.  The workmanship of the folks here is top notch.

mine did the same thing after 50 mph.  I put dynabeads in the tubes and no vibe now, but if it's just as easy for you to use proper weights, I'd go that way, since there's no real scientific way to prove how dynabeads work.

thanks guys, its nice to know that is the problem, now for the fix. They didn't balance the rear either. So now I have to remove both tires and bring it in again. This seems very simple for them to do and makes them look very lazy. You can take my money to do a job then not do it?
