The service manual and owner's manual differ on this.
The service manual says that after an oil change/drain/etc, you should put in 3.1 quarts, the owner's manual says 3.0 quarts.
Both agree that after this, you should stand the bike upright on level ground (or the center stand?) and check to make sure that it's at the upper mark on the dipstick. If it's not on the upper mark on the dipstick, you add up to half a quart more.
6 quarts is roughly twice what you should be running.
I've somewhat overfilled my 650 before, but all that really happened was that the additional oil pressure 'helped' push my shifter seal out.

$5, an oil filter and change, and a week's worth of lost riding later everything was ok. BUT that was probably only half a quart over what my bike wanted/needed added because of side stand lean.
