Tips on shipping frames cheap
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:30:47 PM »
Just a tiny guide and visual on shipping a frame via FedEx.

- Ship the frame bare, no box
- Wrap like crazy with pallet wrap. (it's not too cheap, find a friend who works on a dock to steal you some)
- Cover pointy edges with foam or bubble wrap
- Add support to the bottom so the frame sits flat. I added a little piece of foam under the right side to compensate for the kickstand mount. This keeps the frame from wobbling around, and is easier to carry and set down.
- Have FedEx measure for you, don't ship online. The online shipping wanted to charge me 4x the amount compared to in store. The FedEx employee was very lenient in her measurements.

This cb500 frame ended up costing $35 to ship from Ohio to New Jersey.

Just a heads up, but YMMV. I tried to ship a bare frame, no dice. So I wrapped it in pallet and bubble wrap, still no go. So I tried boxing it up in the same shape as the frame. STILL got rejected. I had to put it in a rectangular box, with ample bubble wrap to keep it from shaking around before they allowed me to ship it. And this wasn't just one FedEx location, I tried two locals ones. It ended up costing me about $125, IIRC, to ship it from MI to MO.

Crazy. I've done four (i think) through my fedex location. All wrapped like this. Seems that the 550 frame dimensions hover right around the balloon rate, so the K frame I just shipped fell under it by one inch, and was $60 from Ohio to Denver.

I do the same wrap, but ship frames with Greyhound. It`s sent station to station not door to door..but the cost is very reasonable
