How do you control the "company kiss-a$$"?
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:01:54 PM »
Everybody has seen this person. He knows it all and has to do EVERYTHING first and fastest to impress the boss. He can be a backstabber as well. His behaviour gives him a sense of entitlement when it comes to anything. The "hot dog" work ethic is sickening. He is the youngest employee and has the least seniority. Did I mention arrogance? Any suggestions
as how to tame this monster? I don't want to go to the boss, just knock this guy off his high horse without starting world war 3....
Any responses to this topic are greatly appreciated. Work really sucks lately :( Thanks for listening folks :)

any solution i've been able to think up are really just petty, vindictive suggestions and at 41, i'm trying not to be that way quite so much anymore. just do your job like you've always done your job. quality will tell in the end.

Bucky's right mate.
Just do your job as best you can and don't worry about those that are full of their own self importance.

Use to, I would have said to set him up and watch him hang himself, but these guys are right. You Do Your Job the best you can and, those types usually end up hanging themselves.   I've always thought that, with their noses where they usually are, would take a chance of getting broken, IF the boss makes a sudden turn! ;D

Yeah, I know that was tacky and I shouldn't have said it. Pretend I didn't. :D I STILL have some meanness now and then. ::)

I'm with Bucky too, I've thrown away my tire iron and ski mask and taken the high road.

We've got a country to reclaim, let's get the job done and ignore anyone who doesn't understand what's really going on.  That's just what the issue is with people like that, they just don't see what's really going on around them.

you said "any" response was appreciated, so I'm going to take the "Low road, immature but wishful thinking" venue.

Mothballs in the gas tank.
Vaseline on their windshield wipers
let the  air out of their tires, then JBweld their valve stems shut.

these are not suggestions, just things to close your eyes and envision every time you'd like to wring the little bastard's neck.

But, FWIW, Bucky is right.

20 years ago, i would have taken some sort of action that at the least would have gotten me fired if caught, jail at the worst. 20 years and plenty of stupid #$%* i've done, i've learned just to let it go.

No Bucky as far as I'm concerned it's not so much maturing as getting lazy in my old age the only thing you can do, is do your job and document everything 69modelj, so if there is a blowup you can say ok I did my part but I'm not sure about so and so.

Take the kid out for a drink. Find out more about him.

Sounds like he's a ladder-climber. I know it sucks to work with one, because they always get the raises, promotions, and cool assignments first.

That's because they work harder and take initiative and play dirty. It's part of the capitalist work ethic.

After having beers with him a few times, figure out how you can ride his coat-tails up the ladder, if you don't feel like working that hard yourself.
No.

Bottom line is, he's working his ass off, and you're posting on how to 'take him out'.  If you really want to take him out, then OUT WORK him!

However, that assumes that he's not going to take HIMSELF out by doing shoddy work in his zeal to be first.  If it's a case of shoddy work, you can perhaps wail 'till he hangs himself.  If he's doing GOOD work and doing it faster, then you need to kick YERSELF in the ass...

Yeah, AGE and (HOPEFULLY) maturity helps us NOT to act irrational. Seems to work with ME, even though, there had been times I'd like to have taken some kind of action towards that type. Even working in a situation like mine, there are still some like that, I just don't have to deal with them. ;)

Just stay in your lane, and do your job.  Who gives a crap what that dude does.  If he crosses you or tries to screw you up, tell him to "f" off.  Where I work (fire department), the new guys get whipped pretty bad, and they either sink or swim.  I suspect this guy will sink in a matter of time.

...I dunno FF154, depending on where you are (esp. office environments) the passive aggressive back stabbing gets really vicious.  I was at a software company where the 'new upstart' ended up taking it upon himself to take credit for everyone else's work and because the boss man liked him, he believed him.  Guy could do nothing wrong, and when he did, it was someone else's fault. Only way to avoid getting the bad end of the stick was to switch departments. :(  My new manager really liked my work, though.

You could stuff half a pack of rubbers and a strange pair of panties in his glove box.  Then you have his old lady running interference for you without ever meeting her.  Or you could become that which you hate and start kissing some ass and develop your own brand of "Hot Dog" work ethic.  After awhile the ass taste goes away.  Or you could start showing up to work drunk.

The little ass wad ended up owning the place. 1 partner sold because he couldn't stand him and the other died.
I quit, got a job at the competition for 2 years, took a 4 millon dollar construction job away from them, finished the first phase and retired. The Architect wants me back for the next phase as a consultant. We'll see.
