Can't Decide On Sometning For The Shelby Charger. Input Wanted.
« on: January 17, 2010, 03:03:32 PM »

I've got a chance to get a set of louvres for the the rear of the Shelby Charger and I can't decide what to do, for sure. They would keep the sun of of the rear seat and carpet, which would add to the life of the upholstery. Also, what ever I might have in the rear of the car, would be partially hidden. They are setup wit hinge mounts at the top and a release at the bottom so that the rear window could be cleaned without completely
removing them. I just am not sure about it though. I personally think that the car would look tougher WITH them. What do YOu ALL think? I have about an hour to decide. ???

Go for it.  It was surely a common mod back when the car was new...

I owned a set on my Nissan 280ZX back then.  My wife had 'em on her Honda Accord, and on her Datsun B210 before that.

And you could buy 'em right from JCWhitney for almost every car going.

I AM considering it Kirk. I feel like it would add to the Look too! Just a bit nervous about mounting it, if I DO go for it. I doubt that anyone has a new one and if they did, it wouls surely go for more than $200. It really LOOKS to be in great shape. Part of me says "Go Fot It!" and then another part of me says, "I don't know now".  ::)

In general picking up a 'period accessory' for any collectible car or bike isn't a mistake.  If you've got the money I'd say go for it Bill.

Well, I had gone back to ebay, to check it out some more, thinking about the response on here AND how It'll look AND THEN, I saw that I had 1 minute to do something! Well, I managed to get it. So, now, it's just a matter of time before thje little Shelby Charger has a set of louvres on the old hatch. ;)

Maybe so, but we don't usually get much snow here (notice I said USUALLY. ::) )

Besides, it is hinged at the top and can be released at the bottom, raised, cleared out, lowered and latched back down. ;)

The only thing I found with some, if left to the original color they came from the factory with it fades when in the sun light too long.. Might want to have them repainted (if not done so already) to keep that new look..

Thanks for that, it does look to be either repainted or very well taken care of. At any rate, it WOULD need to be repainted , if not as nice as it looks. Thank you for your input, I truly want this car to really put it's best foot forard AND will make sure that each feature, looks it's best. ;)

In fact, as soon as I get it, do to it what ever it needs (if anything) and get it mounted, I'll try to get some shots of it and post them. 8)

Did you get it? It is an 80s item that was cool. I would put it on if it was mine. Did you want one of those chargers when they were new or did you laugh at the guys buying them?  I know yours is built but just a question.

Well Ben, I was always up on what was coming out and all and would like to have had each one. But, of course that wasn't possible. Back in 84' I DID manage to get myself a Plymouth Turismo 2.2 and that was a similar version. It had a 110hp 2.2 engine, 5sp, h.d. suspension, quick steering (you could nearly change lanes by sneezing, if you weren't careful and it was a prety fast litle car as well) Yes, I felt funny about the Charger being a smaller 4cyl car, but I could appreciate the features of it though. I REALLY wanted one of those cars back then. AND I wanted a Daytona Z and so on.  Yes, I did go ahead and get the louvre foer the Charger. Then I got to thinking whether I should leave it black or try to get it painted to match the car (blue with the solver down the middle)? Probably just go with the black. I don't ever remember seeing them color coordinated. I'm sure that a lot of folks have laughted at the different models of cars that have changed so much over the years, but I would just sit and wish that they didn't make whatever changes to whatever car, you know?  Take the NEW 4 dr Chargers, I wish they had made them 2 drs, but they didn't. THEN they came out with the NEW CHallengers! 8) I think they are awesome, but then you raise the hood! To me, it looses a lot of the appeal, under the hood appearance.

       I LIKE THIS:

But, then, you pop the hood and there's all this plastic and such. I know that there is performance there, but the look isn't as cool. Kind of like in the 70's when there was all of those hoses, smog gadgets and such, under the hood.

To ME, it's much cooler to pop the hood and see an engine compartment like this (on the 69' GTX):

Of course, I can take care of nearly anything that pops up with the GTX, now the Shelby Charger or my 06' Grand Caravan are a different story. ::)

I WILL have to say that (back in the day), when I read that the Shelby Charger and the Omni GLH would "out perform the old road runners and Super Bees, I thought they were NUTS! Then, I got to reading up on them AND got the 84' Turismo 2.2 and started to change my way of thinking, some!

From all that has been done to the Shelby Charger, that I have, overall, it would probably give the GTX fits and out perform it. BUT, the GTX just gets my heart pumping and I find it REALLY  a BLAST to drive! I get all kind of lookers, with either car, but a number of folks like the GTX because it's "Old School"! 8)

When I get the louvre and get it installed, I'll try to get some shots and post them.

It had really been a life long dream of ours (Brenda's and Mine, to be able to get an old road runner again and the GTX really fills the bill. Now, if ONLY Brenda could be HERE to share it with. :-\

But, I know she knows! ;)

Yeah, I've seen some Mach I's and Boss 302's with the louvers and liked that look too. Well, the louvers are bought and paid for. All I have to do now, is wait til they get here. ;)

Well, I got the louvers today and he had taken and broken it down for shipping (in 2 halves & a bag of hardware). I looked it over and thought I knew how he had done it, but to be sure, I emailed him. Apparently, all of the mounts basically slip under the rear window seal. I had no idea, before I got it and was looking it over. I figured I was going to have to drill some holes somewhere, and I wasn't too keen on THAT! Sure want to make sure this thing is mounted securely before I take off down the highway! That'd be all I'd nee, to have that sucker come loose at around 70mph or so! ::) :-\ Pictures, AFTER I get that thing mounted AND can get some. Weather has been messy off and on, so THAT'S a factor also.
