What do you think the previous owner tried to do? (pictures)
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:32:43 PM »
It's a CB350F

I was in a process of disassembling the engine.

And I found this crack(?) where oil filter case goes on.

It definitely doesn't look like something that suppose to be there.

What do you guys suggest to do? 1.new crankcase? 2. Ahh just leave it. it's fine?

Any pictures that what it suppose to look like will be appreciated

Thank you

Wow, why would anyone want to put a screw in the middle of the oil passage?
And the left side of the passage? Weird.

does it affect performance? I'd leave it alone, you cant see it when the filter is on.

looks like he had a home made oil cooler adapter on it.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

I am pretty sure it is stock - otherwise the same guy owned my bike.  I just split the cases tonight and it looked like that.

I just ran out the garage to check and my oil filter looks the same way with both holes.

Here is a pic that shows both holes in my filter location.

I will check mine when I get home tonight.  I have two engines apart in my basement.  If I find that that son-of-a-#$%* did that to mine too, I'm gonna be pissed!   >:(

Please let me know how yours look like!
Hope this is what it suppose to be  ;)

I'm not too sure if it affects performance since I've never seen my engine running.

I don't want to mess with it as long as bike runs, but I'm worried that the crack as shown in the picture will get bigger as the time goes on?

I believe that the hole in the lower portion drains back into the pan.

Here is a pic I just snapped of mine - Sorry for the bad pic.

Unless you think the crack is the result of the filter bolt tension trying to tear that threaded boss off the front of the block (which I find rather hard to believe), then I wouldn't worry about it.  If it made you feel better, you could carefully mark the position of the very tip of the crack, install the filter housing and crank the bolt down, then remove it and check the crack.  If it hasn't progressed, forget about it.

In my opinion, the worst that can happen is that some oil would bypass the oil filter if the crack runs all the way through to the threaded bore of the filter attachment boss, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

The filter centre is above the main oil gallery across the engine case - this delivers oil to the crank bearings and camgear. Honda drills that upper hole down at an angle through the blind hole back from the filter centre and down into the gallery, then plugs the outer end: all oil flows through this oblique passage down and back to the gallery.
The lower hole is the passage from the oil pump, delivering "dirty" oil to be filtered and sent on to the main galley.

I like your idea. I'll check and  hope the crack doesn't go any further.

Thank god it is a stock. But the hole on the top isn't that clear for such a thing that Hondaman did it.  :-\
Now I don't have to worry about this so much. Thank you
