New guy again with a question.
« on: January 19, 2010, 05:01:23 PM »
I hate to be so bothersome on my first posts but i've also found a 76 cb750a on my local craigslist that seems to be a possible good runner for 700$. I feel almost compelled to buy the bike and get it going to save it from just rotting away. Would anybody else? Its got s 70's gold metal flake paint job and the biggest back rest i've ever seen. Mr. honda would turn over in his grave if he saw what had happened to one of his creations.

NO bother!, I miss my 750A !.... their fun and a boon to ride in traffic....main thing to look out for is a rattly primary chain as the A doesn't have a primary chain tensioner and a loose/worn chain lashes off the upper casing and makes an obvious racket, especially when you start the bike cold....... Good luck if you get the bike.

Hi Scott. I think if you already have one bike that you like that needs much TLC that you should not immediately try to save every other one of them that you find. Honda made over 500,000 of this series. There are many out there still.

Restoring one bike at a time is a good ambition. Otherwise it is like binge eating chips or candy (but drinking beer is ok).

I'd recommend that you keep in touch on your progress and make the move to get another one when you feel ready to do so. Unless of course, you have unlimited space and unlimited budget?

Someone else will buy the craigslist cb750a for sure and hopefully give it what it deserves. Besides, the price seems a tad high I think.

Nonsense!...never heard of anyone on this Forum trying to dissuade someone from buying a bike !!!!! So what if you have 2 bikes to work-on.... look how many running/non-running bikes are listed as owned by members here...!

yea i wasn't really looking to have two projects going at one time, but i hate to see a classic bike with potential just wasting away. I do have enough room for storage at least in the dry for ressureaction at a later time. Maybe i don't know. I'm wondering if it;ll be like passing up on that hemi cuda that u had the chance but never did or whatever classic car thats not made any more.

Make a reasonable offer less than asking price. If he accepts, buy it!
Just 'cause you have 2 bikes [or 5!] doesn't mean that both will be projects at the same time.

Spanner and Cookindaddy are both right... While $700 is a pretty decent price for one of these bikes if it runs, any project, runner or not, is going to take $$ and it's best for you and your wallet to focus on one at a time, probably, unless you have that kind of cash.  Then go nuts. 8)  I like Meriggi's idea. If you offer a respectable amount that's still a bit less than the asking price, then it's more like saying it's out of your hands and it doesn't break your heart to see someone else get it, but you do save a little money if you do end up getting it.  That's how I ended up getting my CL350.

No worries about having two projects. I went to look at the bike today or better what used to be a bike. The guy was nuts he didnt even have a good parts bike! I have no doubt that it would run but it had been so dismantled and cut up and abused it was time to put it out to pasture. And the guy farted loud the whole time i was there looking at the bike. He never missed a beat just kept talkin and fartin' I told him no thanks and good luck with the sale. Oh yeah he was 40 somethin and had just moved back in with his parents.

Wow, watch out ladies in that neighborhood. All I can picture now is a greasy over weight guy in grey elastic sweat pants pulled up to his armpits with a sandwich stuck to his backside because he sat on it a couple days eariler.

It's funny. I guess in a thread you're supposed to stay 'on topic' but the dude with the chopped up 'choppa' afraid of theft reminded me of someone on here.

There was a fella on here awhile back who had a black (550? 750?) that he called his rat bike.  It was really ratty. Duct tape seats, rattlecanned tank, just a ratty old machine, but it ran decent and he liked it a lot.  It had character.  Then some SOB STEALS it.  This machine was def. not pretty by any means, mind you!

Somehow, I dunno if it was by forum members seeing it somewhere or something (we were all on the look out, he was from my city) but he gets it back.  We are all overjoyed.  It was cause for celebration! Not every bike needs to be pretty- it's their owner's steed, as long as it runs safe.

...then not long after, he comes back and says it was stolen again. :(  I suppose that could have meant one of two things: either thieves are looking for bikes with character now, or that he must've lived in a real, real rough part of town.  Maybe both?  Either way, apparently yes, even 'fugly' and 'barely intact' bikes can get stolen, sad as it may be.  I don't remember if he got it back the second time...
