Tank and side covers repainted? Decal replacement advice?
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:13:53 PM »
All,

Some of you I am sure have been through having their tank and side covers professionally repainted.
As an indication, how much did you pay?
I have a CB750 K5 Planet Blue with some - expected - scratches on the tank and covers but I am still wondering if I start saving for a paint job or leave it like it is and proudly display the mark of time of my 35 year old machine...  ;)

Moreover, any of you has some advice on applying the new decals on a tank? The PO had the decal placed miserably; not even joining... had to remove them...

Thanks

Have you given a thought to having the tank repainted and the decals painted back on?  If you have a good body guy he can do it.  Just leave it alone so he can measure the decals, take pictures, match colors, etc.

Johnie,

I have a set of decal... I looked at it and positioning it right is not as easy as 1-2-3...
Not to mention the necessary cuts to make stripes join perfectly.
I also realized that they are usually made to be put on prior to clear coating. So I guess that for the perfect look I will need some painter assistance anyway, at east for clear coating the tank.

The more I look at it and the more I think it does not need full prep and paint job (See pics).
Is there any miracle product or touch up Honda paint or low $$$ special treatment to ask for?

I did not think of the painting of the stripes at all. There is potential for great look or total mess...
Need to find a good painter for that...I think I will take pics and start to look around locally.

Any idea on a right price for this?

Thanks

Oh, I didn't know you already had the decals.  How is the paint on the tank?  Will it look OK with old paint but new decals?  Maybe consider painting the tank and then adding the decals, then clear over the decals.

Not all who offers you new decals, have them in correct measurement. I recommend www.reproductiondecals.com.

Take your decals to the painter who has experience with VJMC - he will know how to do it.

Still, what should be a a correct price for tank and side covers repainting?

I paid 300 plus the kit. $420 total i think. And the job was fairly poor. It was for a 350f and the fork ears were done also. Id be suprised if those tanks were still available but you never know. Iwas told 6-800 from a couple shops basically because no one wanted to deal with it I think.

Looks pretty good from here!

I had a pro paint shop quote me $450 to repaint just a tank - that was for solid colors only. Metallics (like OEM Honda colors) are way more $ because of the added labor.

So if that guy on ebay can do an entire set in metallics for $445 then COOL!!! - if it's a good job...

For decals: I got 3 sets from Jeff at Z1 Enterprises: top quality, good price. The first order for 2 sets was accidentally shipped with just one set, and Jeff at Z1 personally took over and rushed another set out to me for no more than a phone call: trustworthy fellow, IMO!

Sadly I find all those tank decals unattractive, was never fond of the look. Got out dated fast. Custom paint ur tank metallic flake purple and put a signature on the side that says, "Caraline" that'll make it pretty bad ass  :D

Before you go put money down with this guy..from Parkersburg...talk to me..Pricey and average job.
I had to have my clearcoat redone and many delays to get things back.
Currently sells under a different name.

I definately recommend Reproduction Decals.  Also, if you're looking for an accurate reproduction paint job I recommend Blake Conway (760-732-3950) in CA.  He's the guy that does the paint for Vic World's sandcasts.  Its not a matched color, it is the color and original process with the silver base coat, candy color coats and clear coat.  Not cheap though but top notch work.  He did my tank (including inside cleaning and sealing using a clear coating from Caswell), air box, side covers, headlight bucket and fork ears for $1000.  Actually he's done two sets for me, one blue/green and one red, both incredible.  If you call him tell him Mark from Minnesotal says hi.

Any shop that is going to charge you more for a metallic paint job is full of crap. Solid yellows/reds/and some weird pearls are expensive...but your average metallic paint isn't any more than an average solid color price wise. Plus painting metallic on something as small as a tank or sidecover is NOT any more difficult for an experienced painter.

Shop around for quotes and get local recommendations. I'd say away from ebay repainters...at least if it's local and something goes wrong you can go back to them a lot easier. Plus you can ask them step by step what primers they use, the process they go through...and chances are if they are a local shop and have been in business for a while they have no reason to lie to you about what they do and how they do it. I'm not saying you can't get screwed having it done that way, but it's a lot easier to tell what kind of a person is painting your stuff by meeting them in person.
