That's what I thought, but I just wanted some opinions... I figure with 6+ engine mountin points, the stresses concentrated on the mounts, especially those would be negligible enough to no warrant any worrying.

Now the trick is to get that old bolt out!! I don't know why it's still SO stuck??

Hey Corn, you want a case half or two that need some repairing??  Good practice and maybe you could sell em to make a buck or two??

Well I can repair them, but I don't know that I want to mess with selling them  ;).  They where the cases that had a broken tab?

If it were me, I would lower the front a tad. However it really depends on the look your going for that appeals to you.

Nice build so far! I don't know any thing about measuring the valves. You could shoot a PM to Hondaman and see if he has
advice, or better still order his book you wont be sorry.

Oh I have a book, even signed by Mark!!  Just tough to get a measurement with the head loose and disassembled...

Anyone know how much just a valve guide job is??  Also is it worth it to upgrade to bronze guides??

That is a heck of a garage, the Mustang aint bad either! However being in Texas I guess I can't say I am surprised at its size.. I bet that is a standard 2 car in Tx..

Ya its my parents garage, a 2.5 car unit.  It's a good size, but its not big enough for me and my toys!! I'd like to keep the 3 bikes on the empty side, but mom gets that spot...  Either way, I'm lucky to have what I have here, but I'd like it to be JUST mine!! :)

Ya the mustang needs new head gaskets, a 1/4" hole blew out on the drivers side a couple weeks ago...  With the cb getting started and me losing my job last Thursday, it makes it tough to get everything done!! At least I have time!!

Sorry to hear about your job. Nice thing is there is lots you can do with the CB while money is tight.. So enjoy when you have the time to do it. That way when your new job comes along you can focus on the Mustang since the CB will be done or nearly done!

Well I'm pretty sure I'll need new pistons, so do I wait for the eBay 836 kit for $110 or do I get a z1 4th over kit for $200?  I'm really leaning towards the 4th over kit, as I feel with the extra boring, they'll be a wash.  The 4th over will give menhirs power than I had, and leave room for the 836 down the road...  Thoughts?

ok, so update.  the other day i tore down the motor that was in the bike as it sat on the 5th.  what a day getting that damn motor out of the frame!  i can't WAIT to get the frame kit installed!!!  well here's the motor that was in the bike before teardown.  notice the tow middle pipe sections!  the damn bolts are stripped on the inside so i couldn't get anything in there to get em out!  oh well, the head has some damaged areas on the exhaust bolt bungs, so i'm not too concerned right now, as i have the other.  this will probably end up being my practice head for porting.

since this was a leaky motor, the head and cylinders came off VERY easily!!   ;D ;D

cylinder head looks ok from here, have to tear it down to see anymore though...

these cases are in better shape overall, but after some measurements today, i think some of the other parts are better.

trans is still in good shape, this motor was cleaner in the inside since it was taken care of better i think.

kickstarter:

ok, here's my big "concern".  i found this little chunk broken off.  it's in between #2 and 3 cylinders.  is this ok??  i can't see any reason why it wouldn't be, but i'm not the expert!

so today i started measuring parts and deciding what i would keep and sell.  here's the oil pump.  please excuse the lighting, it makes the worst scratches look a lot worse than they are.  do these parts look ok though?  i had a max of 0.006" between the rotors and 0.004" between the outer rotor and the pump housing.  i think this should be ok??

pickup screen was pretty darn clean!!

ok, and now to the transmission.  here's are the two gear shafts.  one of them has one extra oil hole.  i decided to use this as i figured the extra hole wouldn't cause a significant drop in oil pressure and it would be better to have the extra lubrication!  it's the shaft on the right.  thoughts??

ok, here's the difference in output shafts.  what's the bolt head and adjuster-looking-screw on the one on the left??  looks almost like a grease port??  anyone??

at least i'm not the only one!!  i'm finding some differences between my two motors, serial numbers are:

"extra" engine: cb750e-2407499
my engine:      cb750e-2449287

what's strange is one is a k5 and the other is a k6.  i was under the impression that these two motors would be nearly identical for factory parts.  but i'm finding pieces that are either missing or are different from the factory!  strange!

ok, so got some more work done today.  remember that problematic engine mount bolt?  that bugger was WELDED in!  granted it was welded by corrosive action, but still, didn't think the galvanic corrosion would get that bad between the two different materials!  either way, i drilled the sucker out, and i think the mount is still structurally sound, i'll just need a 1/2" bolt to make it snug...

i plasti-gaged the crank bearings and all 5 of them are spot on 0.0015".  i couldn't detect any taper.  also, my rods on the small end were within 0.0004" on the high side between vertical and horizontal.  i think this will be fine.

yesterday i picked out the better set of shift forks and fork shaft.  also picked the shift drum.  i tore down and inspected the transmission components and everything looks great!  all i need for the trans to be finished is to order all new roller bearings from SKF for the trans and engine cases.  i found a local MSC industrial supply that can HOPEFULLY get me all of them i need for about $100.  i might have to go to the stealer or bike bandit to order the output shaft bearing.

tomorrow i should be able to start getting the cases cleaned and blasted, then onto the next phases!

oh ya, i decided on some things "officially" for the build!  hopefully y'all think it's as cool as i do, and if you don't, sucks to be you!

i'm going to go with the 4th over piston kit and bore from Z1, bronze valve guides with new Vesrah valves and a valve job.  home porting with stock springs and probably the stock cam, unless i can find one that's very streetable with a stock displacement motor?  any advice??  HD studs with a Cyclex full gasket and seal kit.  i'll use my PD carbs with one of Tintop's new hybrid stack/filter setups.  HD cam chain w/ M3 tensioner.  Dyna mini 3-ohm coils w/ red plug wires.  Hondaman ignition box.  lockhart oil cooler w/ spin on oil filter adapter.  all stainless hex head bolts (hopefully i can find some button head bolts to keep things sleek!).  carpy 4-1 that will be ceramic coated.  HOPEFULLY a dry clutch kit from Vox if he finishes, he's SO close!!!

for suspension i'll go with a Hondaman rear swingarm rebuild, mild frame reinforcing, tapered steering head bearings and new wheel bearings.  YSS/Hagon/Ikon rear shocks (leaning towards Y.S.S. E-302's).  inside the gl1000 front end, racetech gold valve emulators and straight springs.  buchanan's for 18" front and rear shouldered alloy wheels and SS spokes.  i have NO clue about tires right now, suggestions??  i'll probably run a set of euro/superbike bars and certainly rearsets.  voxonda motor mounts and hednut removable frame section kit.

i'll run a parts'n'more wiring harness that is stripped down to what i need.  oregon motorcycles reg/rect, DDM HID front light, e-start delete, x-cell 12 oz./ lithium battery from Kayaker on here.  LED backlit gauges w/ custom faces from Justin on here.  i have a set of ribbed side covers from frankenstuff, so i have a good painting idea for those!  i'm going to paint the frame a semi-gloss white and go with red tins and accents.  i'll have a custom aluminum cowl built with some really trick touches!

ok, sorry for the length, but lemme know what you think!!

Dude, that is going to be sweet. I believe its going to work great. Also drilling out that bolt should work ok. As long as you go with a bolt that fits snuggly.

Keep up the great work.. Can't wait to see it done.

so i made some more decisions today, and transferred some cash for my budget, which will get eaten up VERY quickly!

Front Suspension: Racetech Gold Valve Emulators w/ straight weight springs, new seals and 15W oil.
Rear Suspension: IKON 7614-1296's.  They're $100 cheaper than Y.S.S. and the customer support is amazing!  I spoke with Dave Gardner (funny, my dad's name is Dave Garner) out of San Francisco and he's going to call Aus this afternoon to confirm the price and everything!
I'm going to run a Webcams 41 camshaft as it's "drop in" ready w/ stock springs.  I'll throw an adjustable cam sprocket on there as well to help with tuning.
Tires: Pirelli Sport Demon's.  I need some advice on choosing the right size.  Remember, GL1000 front end w/ a stock rear end.  I'm going to be using Excel 18" wheels front and rear, I'm thinking 2.15" front and 3 or 3.50" rear wheels with 110/80/18 up front and 130/70/18 in back.  Thoughts???

With the work I have planned, methinks that the stock setting on the carbs will be a bit lean!   :D :D

*edit*
i think later on when the money allows, i'll throw a fork brace from Randakks on there along with an adjustable steering damper.  the damper would mainly be for looks, and it wont happen until i get the front end perfect!!

Good call on the Ikons, I hear good things about them.  Looks wise, I think they look more proper on a street bike than the YSS's.  Plus you saved $100.  Why not save another $100 and get the emulators from Z1?

Nothing like a little time off to do nothing and work on the bike right?  Love the Mustang and the paint job.  I had a nice 2 door Tahoe in that color that somebody in an Altima decided to submarine :(

Just call me Timmaaaaay!!!

well i don't know about the quality differences between the z1 emulators and the race tech?  i know the race tech's are proven and work so their quality is top notch.  anyone know about the z1's?

also, what's the difference between these two advancers?  one has a "300" and the other has a "323" on them.  any performance increases one way or the other??

ok, started hacking on the frame!!!  with all the parts i hacked off including the battery and the starter, i dropped 23 lbs from the frame.  the frame by itself weighs at 31.4 lbs according to a new and fairly accurate bathroom scale.

later on i will weigh the wheels that i had on there compared to the wheels and tires i get from buchanans   ;D ;D  this will be followed by the GL front end and other comparison pieces.  i'm after as much weight savings as i can muster for the road.  i believe the rear shocks will shave about 3-4 lbs total as well, and i'm sure the rims will give me a much greater amount of unspring weight loss.

pictures of the frame coming soon!

Hey wannabridin, just finished reading through your thread.  Great work documenting it.

Sounds like you have a solid plan, and have left yourself some options for the future.  Are these projects ever truly finished. ;) :)  The Gordon frame kit has got to be one of the best mods for a 750, I just ordered one from HedNut for my 750 build.  Thanks for the info on the GL1000 fork swap.

WOOO!!!  just spent quite a chunk 'o change, BUT it should be for the best!!

just ordered a set of Excel rims and spokes from Buchanan's.  front size: 2.15 x 18" and rear is 3.50 x 18".  i feel this will allow clearance of a 110/80 up front and a 130/70 in the rear without any problems.  thoughts???

i also ordered full race tech front end parts, emulators, adapters, straight rate springs, new seals and some oil.  that all should ship out today!

also, ordered a full gasket and seal kit from cyclex.

then i finally ordered a set of IKON 7614-1296's.  My contact there said that he spoke with the factory in Australia yesterday and they actually have a few of these bodies ready to be made, so there's a chance i could get these before the go on a 3+ week holiday break!!!  i know i won't have a chance to use them, but i just hate waiting around on parts!!

i'm pumped!!  i think i'm going to go with some BT45's for the tires, because i feel they're a good compromise of handling and cost.  plus they will look right on a vintage bike!

i should get my cases, cylinder and head, alt cover and shifter cover back from the blaster early next week so i can start painting and putting the motor back together!!!

i'm going to finish installing the gordon frame kit from Brendan tonight.  hopefully after that i'll start tearing down the front forks and the old stock wheels.  then i'll need to tear down the calipers and rebuild them and just start rebuilding anything else i can think of!

Ya I got laid off, so I dipped into the "fun" account!  And it really wasn't too bad!! Some people spend more than my budget on their engine alone!!

*edit*

ok so i ordered some more parts.  Z1 has GREAT prices fyi!!!

ordered: HD studs, HD cam chain, 4th over pistons!!, start hole plug, cam chain tensioner and roller and a set of chrome super bike bars.  i'm trying to get the parts i'll need most from the "bottom up" of the build.  woooo parts!!!
