Topic: Socket/Wrench Set Questions

I'm looking out for a set of sockets and wrenches with the most value, since I don't have a huge budget, but I also would be willing to spend a bit more for something that will last or be the most versitile. I like Craftsman because I've taken a few tools back for replacements and never had an issue, and Sears stores have many locations. I'm looking at the sets they have, and wondering what I'll actually need and use, because it seems that many of their sets include tools I either already have such as screwdrivers or not sure I need like nutdrivers.

-These would be for both motorcycles and cars. Metric and Standard.
-I'm fairly sure I'd like to find some 6 point sockets.
-Is the 1/4 inch drive ratchet and sockets useful enough to have?
-Are 6 point combination wrenches a good idea, or would a 12 point variety be a better option?
-I'm not worried about a set having its own storage box, because I'll be putting them in another tool box.

Any ideas or suggestions for a guy just starting to build a good set?

Well my 2 cents: on the somewhat rare times you need the 1/4 drive sockets, just buy the ones you would really use loose or an incomplete set on clearance & a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter, therefore no handle needed.  6 point combo wrenches aren't as common as 12s & 12 point can offer more angles of use.  If the bolt is that tough to get off, use the 6 point socket & heat or PB Blaster.  Craftsman are mostly fine quality, but only worth the money when on sale, IMO.  I think Home Depot carries Husky brand (at least up here) & they're good too. Also Gray, but don't see them much anymore?

I can't ever remember using a 1/4" drive on my bike.

If it's only for your bike why bother with the imperial stuff?  Ah, just seen it's for cars also.

A fine set, probably more than you'll ever use.  Get it gift wrapped PS Don't lend it out to anybody! (fastest way to have an less tools)

This set is not only for the bike, but also for a new old beat up truck I'm probably going to get for hauling things, so the SAE stuff will be needed.

Pawn shops and swap meets are great places to find cheap tools.
I assembled a complete set of Craftsman at the swap meet for a $1 a socket and $5 for a ratchet.
Wrenches were only a couple of bucks each too.
